A dreamy slice of a watery Eden. Look around you and you might find it hard to believe you are in Europe, never mind just a two-hour flight from grey skies and rain-soaked streets.

The giant 'tropical' pool, the only one of its kind in Portugal, is made from and surrounded by white sand. It even has a beach, which children adore, and which helps warm the water, as it faces the sun.

Or try wild swimming in the tree-lined river. We have a 200-mtr stretch of calm water, about 1.2 mtrs deep, not as warm as the pool but still very pleasant, and full of little fish. If you stay still they will come and nibble at your skin – a recognised spa therapy! You might spot a kingfisher while swimming downstream to the river bar (open May – Oct), which as well as serving great coffees offers snacks, a diving platform and, children's paddling pool; or you could paddle down in the wooden rowing boat or kayak; or just walk - it takes only 6 mins.

The Central Portugal region

Sometimes called 'Portugal's Tuscany, this lovely region has some of the most diverse and unspoiled countryside in Europe. From the high mountains (with ski slopes) of the Serra da Estrela in the east, through gorgeous hilly country of warm, clear lakes and rivers to the lagoons and vast golden beaches of the Silver Coast in the west, you can 'visit' about six different countries on one day!

This is the REAL Portugal, not a rip-off tourist ghetto. You will return home wondering why it is not better known, but very glad that it isn't!

Lousa

The Coimbra/Serra Lousã area is recognised as one of Portugal's most beautiful. English is widely spoken, yet it remains unspoiled by mass tourism.

Lush green hills (great for rambling or mountain biking) speckled with old stone villages. Warm, clear rivers and lakes which are wondeful for swimming in summer - so much warmer and safer than the ocean. Some have beaches with caf'e/restaurant, others you might have all to yourself.

Arouce Castle in Lousã, barely 10 mins by car, is one of Portugal's leading beauty spots. In its deep gorge are a good restaurant and natural swimming pool. Above are lovely walks, barbecue area, caves, a shrine.

The medieval riverside university city of Coimbra (Portugal's third city) is less than 30 mins by car. It has every modern facility, and its quaint streets and little squares are a delight to stroll about in.

The Roman ruins at Conimbriga have some of Europe's best preserved mosaics.

World Heritage Tomar is one of Portugal's loveliest small towns, famed for its Knights Templar castle and convent.

Take a gondola ride on the canals in Aveiro, then a short drive to the beaches of Costa Nova, famed for its candy stripe houses.

The vast golden beaches of the Silver Coast are about one hour by car, but most people prefer to swim in the much warmer and safer waters of the local rivers and lakes.
