The Ionian Islands region
Kefalonia lies in the sparkling blue Ionian Sea to the West of mainland Greece.
It is the largest of the Ionian islands, yet has managed to avoid the tourist commercialisation of neighbouring Corfu or nearby Zakynthos. The mystical island of Ithica lies off the North-East coast of Kefalonia.
Kefalonia is a mixture of unspoilt beaches. majestic mountains, fertile green valleys, forests and olive groves. Mount Ainos, in the south of the island, is higher than Britain’s Ben Nevis, and affords wonderful views of the island’s many villages and beaches. The whole island abounds in wild flora and fauna—early Spring sees Kefalonia ablaze with the colours of millions of wild flowers.
Kefalonian people are wonderfully sociable and can be extremely generous. They are very family-orientated and love children.
Kefalonia has two main towns:-
Argostoli, the capital, has a full range of shops and services including the island’s main hospital.
Lixouri, on the Paliki Peninsula, has more traditional shopping and all one would expect from a small town.
There is a frequent ferry service (20 minutes crossing) between Argostoli and Lixouri.
Lourdas (also known as Lourdata) lies amongst pines and vines on the edge of Lourdata bay, which offers a 3 mile long white beach. Mount Ainos lies as a backdrop to the north.
There are many tavernas and cafes in the village square where you can sit in the shade under a most enormous plane tree.
Lourdas is well set-up for the tourist, having many bars and tavernas in its’ centre. The beach at Lourdas stretches along the southern coastline and is made up of mainly pebbles and shingle leading into crystal-clear waters. Many tavernas and coffee-bars line the full length of Lourdas beach.
Only a short drive either side of the resort of Lourdas will take you to numerous different swimming areas from shingle coves to rocky snorkelling adventures.
For retail therapy you are about 12 km. from the island’s capital, Argostoli..

"Relaxing week in a great villa on an unspoilt island"
We stayed at the Villa Kokili for a week in July. The villa is modern and well equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. An excellent welcome pack was waiting for us in the fridge.
The villa is located within convenient walking distance down a hill to the beach and a good selection of tavernas.
The idea was to have a relaxing week away from it all and this is what we experienced. We would have liked to do some walking on the island but it was too hot in July so we are hoping to return sometime outside of the summer months when it will be cooler.

"Very comfortable, well equipped villa."
Villa Kokili is a spacious, well-equipped villa perfect for a relaxing holiday in a lovely, quiet resort. The rooms are very spacious and very clean and all the bedrooms have a large ensuite shower room. The beds are extremely comfortable - sometimes not the case in Greece. The best thing about the villa is the large pool area which is difficult to tear yourself away from. I would recommend this villa to anyone but you will need a car as the hill up from the beach and resort is a killer.
