The Algarve region
Nearby Rocha da Pena is a natural geological phenomenon steeped in history of Saracens' horses hidden in the natural caves. Today it is a circular walk of 5 km. This unusual landmark towers 480 metres above the countryside with flora and fauna in abundance. Although some 20 minutes from the coast, fishermen use the unusual shape of Rocha Pena as a reference point.
Around the area there are many vantage points where over 50 km of coast can be seen. Alte, Malhao, Rocha da Pena. On the way up to Salir from the coast you have many opportunities to stop and take in the view.
Due to the warm climate, the outdoor life beckons with many designated walks through charming old hamlets all year around.
7 Mins to the Salir. 20 Mins to Loule.
The small town of Salir, nestling near Rocha de Pena, grew up around it's Moorish castle dating from 12th century. A small excavation can be seen in the glass floor of the Museum which covers it.
The town was a fortified location and is characterised by its low, white houses with narrow streets spread over the hillside.
Legend has it, Salir was first called Castelar but was renamed at the time of the banishment of the invading Moors. The Saracens were heard crying out "Salir" "Salir" meaning escape, exit. This word is Spanish for leave.
For such a small rural town it boasts a post office, mini markets, cobbler, restaurants and cafés, health centre, police and petrol station but most important of all wonderful views and a warm welcome. An old lifestyle rules.
The annual May Corn-Ear festival (Festa da Espiga) marks the beginning of harvest time reviving customs, arts, traditions, flavours and popular culture of times gone by. The parade and floats pass through the town's main street representing the business of farming and handicrafts from sowing, harvesting, threshing, bread-making, bee-keeping, cork harvesting, basketry and wicker handicrafts.
There are Stunning views from S. Sebastian church terrace that show a snapshot of rural Algarve for a tranquil step back in time.
