The Algarve region
The Algarve is renowned for its warm climate and clean sandy beaches. The climate is similar to that of the Mediterranean with over 300 days of sunshine a year, although the sea – being the Atlantic – is generally a little cooler, but cleaner. Most of the rainfall is in the Winter months and the temperatures throughout the year are significantly higher than in Northern Europe and other Northern countries. The Summers boast long sunny days with temperatures in the 30sC/90sF, it seldom rains and Quinta da Eira, at an elevation of about 1,000 feet, usually has a pleasant breeze even in the hottest months.
The long beautiful coastline has amazing beaches of fine sand which are seldom over crowded and there are many delightful rocky coves as well, all of which are worth visiting. There is also a fascinating hinterland of hills and forests, villages and farms, castles and churches to visit.
The Algarve has some of the very best Golf Courses in the world. The nearest courses at Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Vilamoura, which also have Tennis Courts, are all within a 30min drive of the House. There are also some excellent Water Parks and Theme Parks like Zoomarine offer the possibility of watching and swimming with dolphins. Crazy World is a Zoo Park where you can see different kinds of animals. For those looking for local pottery, linen, clothes or leather goods, which are generally good value in Portugal, a wide variety can be found and the new Shopping Malls in Faro and Guia are well worth visiting.
Loule / Vale Telheiro area
Loule is a charming market town with a very attractive tree lined central Avenue and in the older parts a maze of narrow cobbled streets and pretty squares. It has more than one supermarket and many good shops including a shop lined pedestrian walkway. Whilst most famous for its copperware, you will also find hand painted pottery, basketware and other locally produced items. The town Fruit and Vegetable market is open every day except Sunday and an extensive Gypsy market selling a wide variety of clothes, linen and local ‘nick-nacks’ is held every Saturday. The castle and museum are well worth a visit, as are the numerous churches and there are also many excellent restaurants in and around Loule serving both local and international food.
How to get there
The website www.skyscanner.net is a good way to find flights. It gives you the price of the cheapest flights from a selection of airlines for a selected day, week or month.
If you are arriving by air, then you should fly to Faro. If you are coming by rail, there is a station in Loule.
In either case you will need to hire a car - unless you are driving to Portugal - and the owner can arrange this for you, or if you prefer to do this yourself, there are plenty of car hire firms that operate from faro airport including Hertz, Avis and a number of local companies.
Depending on how you intend to arrive in the Algarve, the owner will also provide you with directions and a route map for you to drive to the property
