The Algarve region

Central Algarve is where you will find some of Europe's most stunning beaches and with more sunshine hours than anywhere else in Europe, even in mid-winter you will guaranteed a temperate climate and an unforgettable holiday. Whether you are looking for a beach holiday or watersports, sailing and golf, you won't be disappointed. The owner of Monte do Casal would even be happy to introduce you to his private golf club!

Monte do Casal nestles in a lush, herb covered valley between the coast and mountains near to the village of Sao Bras de Alportel in the Central Algarve. This is the secret heart of the Algarve, where wild almond, fig and pomegranate trees grow around the villages, whose simple charms and whitewashed houses give the feel of having stepped back in time. The church, with its splendid bell tower, goes back to the 15th Century and you can still see traditional crafts being practiced; handmade tiles and bricks, and baskets woven with palm leaves. The area is renowned for its almond confectionary, especially during the Easter period, and the wild oregano is used in gazpacho and in the local bread soup, known as “acorda”. Sao Bras has a good supermarket and a farmers market every Saturday where you can buy fruit, vegetables and seafood. There is a Post Office, Tourist Information Office and Bar/Restaurant.

Only eight kilometres away is the pretty town of Loule with its Medieval castle and historic centre, much of which has retained its original charm. A good selection of shops and restaurants. The narrow alleys of the old town area joy to explore. There is a daily covered market which is perfect for buying fish, seafood, fruit and vegetables and local handicrafts.

There are numerous small towns and fishing villages on the coast between Faro and the Spanish border – particularly worth visiting is Olhao, which is renowned for its fish market and numerous seafood restaurants, and the elegant town of Tavira with its roman bridge spanning the water and riverside restaurants.

There is lots of water parks and entertainment for children – the Waterslide Park at Quarteira and the very popular Zoomarine at Guia which is close to Albufeira, where there are dolphin displays, seals and sea lions and fascinating tropical birds.
