The Aquitaine region

The region

Loubes Bernac is in the northern part of the Lot et Garonne administrative department, just south of the Dordogne and Gironde departments. All are within the Aquitaine region, which encompasses Bordeaux on the Atlantic coast down to the Basque country in the Pyrenees, and the Spanish border.

A turbulent history has left the region dotted with bastides (fortified hilltop towns), ancient strongholds of Charlemagne, Richard the Lionheart and the Black Prince. The gite is almost equidistant from 3 bastides - Duras, Eymet and the larger Sainte Foy La Grande. As well as chateau, cafes, shops and restaurants, the weekly markets in each of these towns are well worth a visit.

The region is renowned for its gastronomy. As well as the pleasures of exploring the local restaurants, there are many delicious local wines and most of the local vineyards will welcome you for a degustation (tasting session) - often with a tour of the winery. Visit the delightful town of St Emillion and its world renowned vineyards for a more exclusive Grand Cru, plus do check out the catacombs while you are there.

A bit further afield there are picturesque stone villages and dramatic castles on the banks of the Dordogne. The caves in and around Lascaux offer subterranean trips to view the remarkable rock formations and prehistoric paintings.

To the west, beyond the city of Bordeaux, visit the Dune du Pilat, claiming to be the largest sand dune in the world, and the wonderful beaches of the Atlantic coast. Bordeaux itself is an impressive city to visit. Listed as a UNESCO world heritage site (as is St Emillion) on account of its outstanding 18th century architecture and concentration of historical buildings, it also boasts an impressive range of galleries and museums.

Activities

For the more energetic - walking/rambling, fishing, canoeing, horse riding, tennis and cycling are all available nearby. Take a ride in a hot air balloon. Or enjoy a round of golf at Chateau des Vigiers (the exclusive golf and country club is only 15minutes drive from the property).

Loubes-Bernac

Nearby villages

The villages of Loubes Bernac and Margueron, both of which are 3km from the hamlet in opposite directions, each have a small shop and a Mairie (local Mayor's office). In Loubes Bernac there is also a bar/restaurant called Comme chez Mamy, a post office, boutique and a part time doctor's surgery.

The shops provide a good range of essentials - bread, groceries, household goods and the like. Comme chez Mamy provides an interesting choice of traditional regional cuisine at lunchtime or carry out pizzas (both of which are excellent!), as well as a good place for a game of pool and a cool drink at the bar.
