Quietly tucked away off a private drive, just a 200 yard stroll from the pub, shop and picturesque creek in Lerryn, a spacious, detached, single-storey cottage, converted with skill and imagination from a stone-built barn. Inside, lots of natural materials, oak floors, exposed stone walls, high apex beams and wood-clad ceilings - everything done to a high standard and made smart and contemporary. Surrounded by a good-sized, enclosed garden - at the front, pretty passion flower and clematis trail over walls behind a raised, suntrap terrace (picnic table) and deck; at the back, a lush, mainly lawned, shrub and fern-filled garden (unfenced stream) with lovely outlook over fields beyond and little sitting-out area (picnic table) for evening sun. Granite step up to stable doors to huge (48' long) living/dining/kitchen with free-standing kitchen units (slimline dishwasher, microwave, fridge-freezer), big comfy sofas, woodburner, TV/DVD; utility/boot room (washing machine, tumble drier) with door to back garden. A bedroom at each end of the cottage – double (5' bed, footboard) with en suite shower-room (suite), and a twin; bathroom (suite plus bath-shower). Lovely location in a quiet corner of this pretty village. No children under 5, except pre-crawling babies.

The West Country region

South Cornwall: between the river Tamar and river Fowey and south of Bodmin Moor is inland Cornwall at its most gentle and lovely: deep, wooded valleys (including on Bodmin Moor's southern edge) between sheep and cattle-grazed fields; tidal creeks (exceptionally pretty Lerryn is on one of them). Most of it is delightfully by-passed by main roads.

On the coast are long sandy beaches (Whitsand Bay), high headlands and sandy coves at the foot of cliffs (Lantic Bay) to walk to, two of Cornwall's loveliest cove villages (Kingsand, Cawsand) and a classic fishing village (Polperro). From Looe - river-mouth fishing village/resort with sandy beach - you can fish and sail. Round here Daphne du Maurier lived and wrote. A branch line railway chugs pleasantly from Liskeard to Looe. Don't miss the Musical Instrument Museum near St Keyne. Just to the west is Cornwall's star modern attraction, The Eden Project, worth a once-a-year visit into the future indefinite, and Lanhydrock, a very lovely National Trust house and garden. Beyond them begins the extraordinary and spectacular china clay country, good for a visit (excellent museum). You should go to Cotehele beside the Tamar, too, and Calstock for the 'messing about in boats' activity.

Lerryn: exceptionally pretty village (pub, PO/shop, village green) spreading along both banks of the Lerryn Creek which ebbs and flows into the river Fowey through dense woodland, creating an ever-changing scene. Cycling from the village. Pony-trekking, 5 miles; canoe trips, 9. Lostwithiel (shops, pub, restaurants, castle), 4 miles. Fowey, 4 miles via ferry.
