Now the temperature is beginning to really warm up. Temperatures of 30 celsius and higher will be the norm for some weeks to come so don't forget your factor 20 or higher. Temperatures of over 30C are forecast for the next few daya. Los Nietos will be lucky with its cooling breeze which develos each day as the sun reaches its height.
The flamenco festival Cante de Mineras in La Unión is coming up. We believe this is the premier festival in Spain.
CHECK IT OUT ON YOU TUBE or in real life.
If you like cycling, why not pop up to see the Bateria de Cenizas, the northern coastal protection for Cartagena. The guns are BIG - VERY BIG - VERY VERY BIG and they were made by Armstrong in Britain.
September will see the Romans and Carthaginians Festival in Cartagena - I wonder if there will be some elephants this year. They could even use the Sierra Minera as a substitute for the Alps.
Our next availability will be 7th October.
October offers a pleasant and warm time for a late season holiday. You can explore without wilting in the heat of summer and, of course, the rates are not as high at that time of year.
PLEASE DON'T FORGET THOUGH, we have friends and contacts and will be more than happy to help you to arrange a holiday to suit your wishes as ever we are able. We have access to more than 170 properties close to the Mar Menor.
SEPTEMBER IS THE MONTH FOR THE CARTHAGINIANS AND ROMANS FESTIVAL IN CARTAGENA - AN EXCELLENT TIME TO VISIT TO SEE A VERY REALISTIC SPECTACLE. Not many elephants perhaps but it is necessary to think about Health and Safety these days. Hanibal did not take them over the Alps to Italy because he thought they would be safe for the Romans!
The Cartagena processions for SEMANA SANTA are described as a World Tourism Event. The floats are nothing short of spectacular - the flowers are changed daily and cost more than 17,000€ for one float! Many of the people leading each float wear the conical hat of the penetent. They are NOT a Spanish branch of the Ku Klux Klan!
Simple pleasures at Villa Cristal No 12 include watching the Spanish equivalent of the Red Arrows practicing over the Mar Menor, hunting sea snails to add to your paella and wandering the shoreline in search of sea balls.
You could even watch the colourful bee eaters as they hunt flies above the terrace. You may even notice a great grey shrike plumet from the telegraph wires to catch some hapless insect.
THE VILLA CRISTAL CURE:
STAGE 1 - Ask yourself what time it is.
If the answer is - 'I don't know.' - the cure is beginning to work.
STAGE 2 - Ask yourself what day it is.
If the answer is - 'I don't know.' - the cure is definitely working.
STAGE 3 - When you find that you neither know nor care what time or day it is,
The VILLA CRISTAL CURE HAS WORKED.
So, as soon as your are cured, you can get on with really enjoying your holiday.
Combined with the fresh air, the weather and the fantastic choice of brilliant fish and food generally, you should be ablt to return home after your holiday ready to face all the challenges offered by daily life.
The village MEDICAL CENTRE is about 600 m from Villa Cristal No12. It is open each weekday morning until around 14:00.
ONE PROBLEM YOU MAY VERY RARELY NEED TO DEAL WITH IS A STING FROM A WEAVER FISH WHILE PADDLING - Weaver fish are small fish which bury themselves just below the surface of the sea bed. They only have their eyes and mouths clear of the sand. They have spines in their dorsal fins and gill covers. These spines inject a poison if you tread on them, It is extremely painful. Medical advice received from a doctor friend is that the pain may last for 2 hours or more. On most occasions when he was asked to attend an emergency of this nature, he arrived just as the pain was wearing off.
WHAT TO DO
PLACE FOOT IN A BOWL OF WATER WHICH IS AS HOT AS THE PERSON CAN TOLERATE. YOU WILL FIND THAT ONCE THE FOOT GETS USED TO THE TEMPERATURE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO ADD MORE HOT WATER TO GRADUALLY RAISE THE TEMPERATURE.
WHY DO THIS?
THE POISON IS NEUTRALISED BY HEAT.
BUT PLEASE BE CAREFUL NOT TO SCALD THE PATIENT!
BEST OPTION - ALWAYS WEAR SOMETHING ON YOUR FEET WHEN PADDLING - AS A YOUNGSTER i ALWAYS WORE MY WELLIES WHEN I WENT PADLING!!!

The Murcia region
Murcia Region could be called Europe's Vegetable Garden. Depending on the season you will see a tremendous variety of produce growing in the fields. Wine is grown in the north and fishing is important on the coast.
If you view the Murcia plain from high up you will realise that it is an enormous volcanic crater. Minerals were important until the 1960's and the associated work attracted people from all over Spain. As a result, La Unión, the centre of the Sierra Minera, Mountains of Mines, became a melting pot for flamenco and Spanish culture. La Unión still hosts the most prestigious Flamenco Festival in Spain each August. A guitar chord known as the Cartagenera has resulted.
Murcia city has the most impressive cathedral and many museums and other attractions making it well worth a visit. Investing in a guided tour will pay dividends.
Cartagena has some brilliant museums, the best from the point of view of children is probably ARQUA, the museum of Underwater Archaeology. There is an exhibit showing some of The Odyssey Mercedes treasure - 14 tonnes of gold and silver raised from a depth of 1500 metres and the subject of a long long legal battle. There is a tremendous selection of hands on exhibits - the whole family could achieve their GCSE in Underwater Archaeology in two hours!!! But don't forget the shops in Calle Mayor and Calle del Carmen or out at Espacio Mediterraneo. The unusual aspect of Cartagena is that most parts are accessible by bus for a very cheap fare and the rest is easy to walk round.
If you really want to plan your holiday check out www.murciatoday.com for a Whats On guide.
As a general guide, if the sun is shining and you can keep out od any wind which may be blowing
Los Nietos is a very old (arguably more than 4000 years old) fishing village. The population is around 90% Spanish who are permanent residents. The village has pretty much everything you need within easy walking distance including a narrow gauge train to Cartagena through the Sierra Minera.
The Mar Menor is the largest salt water lagoon in Europe, it is about 150 metres from Villa Cristal No 12. It is both shallow and safe. It is also warmer than the Mediterranean. A shore Fishing Licence is easy and cheap to get and then you could catch bass, grey mullett or guilt-head bream as well as some other types of bream. There is some water at the mouth of the rambla close to Villa Cristal where fartet fish live. They are some extremely endangered type of tooth carp which tolerates an vast difference in water salinity, but please don't diturb them
La Lengua de la Vaca (The Cow's Tongue) headland close to us. A natural reserve is just the other side of the dry river bed. In spring you will hear nightingales and may see bee eaters. For the serious ornithologist there is much to be seen in the way of indigenous species and during the spring and autumn migrations. Eagles and even Ospreys may be seen.
If you have an interest in archaeology, you may be lucky to find signs of the Iberian occupation of Los Nietos in the form of pottery shards if you walk the fields. Signs of the later Carthaginian and Roman periods can also be seen.
The promenade is about 2 Km and has a British run Viva Bar at the far end where the kite and windsurfers have a wonderful time.
Children will enjoy the beach which has a climbing frame and loads of sand. Older children may wish to try chasing the sea snails but warn them - they are very fast - a few make an interesting addition to a home-made seafood paella.
There is an all-weather football pitch and tennis court close to the Medical Centre - don't forget your EHICs.
There is a truism - You must have some clouds for a really good sunset and you may be lucky to see some spectacular sunsets.
