Your advice to hire a car was bang on. I ended up driving nearly 1200 kilometres so we "did" the entire area. The highlights:
Cartagena, Tabarca Island trip and the dunes, but the two really special ones were the genuine wilderness at Calfarque and, out on its own, the "modernista" house in Novelda.

We had such a nice time, we have only been in the area during the Summer months, we found it such a refreshing change to be able to park and walk about easily.
