COSTA CALIDA/MURCIA

Murcia region often known as The Costa Calida extends along 250 kilometres (155 miles) of coastline and is blessed with 320 days of sunshine a year and an average temperature of 17 degrees centigrade (63ºF). In comparison to the rest of spain this is a relatively under developed region and therefore popular with the spanish. Now it is becoming more popular with British visitors.

The exquisite Mediterranean cuisine that combines fish and seafood with fresh garden produce, from the locality provides a variety of surprise for any palate. The area brings a fantastic mix of Spanish history in the mountains and local cities of Cartegena and Murcia which offer enthralling days out for all.

The pick amongst the crop is the elegant and sophisticated Romblemar restaurant. - renowned for its excellence and a favourite for the local business communiuty. For a treat select a fresh lobster from the table before it escapes!

Lo Pagan situated a little further north on the Mar Menor attracts thousands of visitors from around the world to its famous open-air mud baths - known as Las charcas de las Salinas. They are recommended for all types of skin and rheumatic ailments. It is advisable to combine these mud baths with the waters from the Mar Menor, which have therapeutic properties due to the high content of mineral salts and iodine. Everybody who visits the region should at least visit, enter the public mud baths and just try it once. In addition Lo Pagan has various tranquil beaches, ideal for boating and swimming.

THE REGIONAL PARK OF SALINAS AND SAN PEDRO DEL PINATAR:
The most important wetlands in the region of Murcia. Here large salt lakes act as a stop over for the flocks of Pink Flamingo's here each year on their journey to North Africa at the end of the summer.

CARTAGENA
Head South for about 25kms and you will find Cartegena - Spain's oldest port. It is still a major maritime port with both commerce and the military - hosting the Spanish navy yards. This historical city was founded in 227BC and the multitude of civilisations have left their mark on the city as numerous archilogical sites and museums testify. It contains many Roman ruins and an archaeological treasure including the Roman Theatre, discovered in 1987, and is still undergoing excavation today.
In amongst this are the Art Nouveau buildings, including the majestic Ayuntamiento (town hall) and interesting museums are a reflection of the importance and prosperity of this harbour city steeped in 3,000 years of history.

LA MANGA STRIP
On the far side of the Mar Menor lagoon is a narrow strip (some places less than 100 metres wide) that is 14 miles long (22 kilometres) known as La Manga. Here you can walk from one side to the other strip and move from the Mar Menor beaches onto the Mediterean Sea.
Its sandy beaches and clear waters have made it one of the highest regarded tourist resorts on the Mediterranean, offering excellent water sport facilities, including sailing, kayaking, windsurfing and scuba diving.
As you approach the top end of La Manga you will pass the Marina and see a number of exclusive large mansions and villas. This is where you will find the Roda Beach Club, with a pool, jacuzzi, bar, restaurant and water sports. You can reach it by car or take the water taxi from the apartment at Roda Golf Club.

CABO DE PALOS
Where La Manga links to the mainland you will see the famous lighthouse overlooking its quaint harbour. There are plenty of bars and restaurants with magnificent panaoramic views to savior as you sample the freshly landed fish. Under the sea there are realms of colourful fish in this Marine Reserve. Divers love it for the variety of marine life entangled with the many wrecks. On Sundays there is a local market to pick up some bargains.

THE REGIONAL PARK OF CALBLANQUE
Calblanque is situated along from Cabo De Palos. This part of the Murcian coast still preserves all of it's natural beauty, with arid mountains and rugged cliffs, dunes, long sandy beaches and an intensely Blue sea. This nature haven can be visited on foot, by bicycle or horseback, and is home to interesting vegetation and birds. There are many secluded beaches hidden in this area.

LOS BELONES:
La Manga's nearest town, where the rich and famous are frequently spotted dining out at one of the many local restaurants or tapas bars. Try out restaurant Romblemar - where all the local spanish eat and select fresh fish from the table.

LA UNION:
La Union was a mining town for the Carthaginians and Romans shipped throughout the entire empire. In the 19th century the silver rush attracted newfound wealth to La Union. The prosperity during this period is reflected in a number of Art Nouveau buildings in the centre of the town, such as the Casa Del Pinon. Well worth a visit.

LORCA

For diving enthusiasts, the Hormigas Islands near Cabo de Palos have been declared a Marine Reserve due to their exceptional beauty and the conservation of the seafloor.Divers see it as Spains premier dive sites due to the large number of shipwrecks from the rocky waters around the area.
For those less ambitious it is possible to snorkel within the gentle confines of the Mar Menor near to the shallow beaches.

Cave Diving
Underwater caves are located between Cartegena and La Azohia, with large underwater vaults and galleries. Maps of the caves should be used since some are several kilometers long with maze like galleries.
