The Murcia region
The Mar Menor (Little Sea) is a unique area located on the east coast of Spain, within the region of Murcia just above the city of Cartegena with its castles, forts and lighthouses. Few regions have the good fortune to have both a saltwater lake and a Mediterranean coastline. The region of Murcia has both and the salt water lake covering an area of 170sq.km is known as Mar Menor, the largest salt water lake in Europe. Mar Menor is on the so called Costa Calida (Warm Coast).
The coast of the Mar Menor is flanked by small towns such as San Pedro del Pintar in the north. Below this is San Javier with its international airport and over 20,000 residents.
The area offers several golf courses, municipal parks and the famous resort of La Manga. La Manga has more than 40km of beaches and the unique possibility of choosing between two seas with very different water temperatures, one with waves and one practically calm all year long. With so much water here there is no wonder that the area is a haven for water sports. The possibilities here are endless from sailing to diving, windsurfing and jet skiing.
The Mediterranean side of Mar Menor with the thin coastal strip of hotels and houses runs the length of the lake. Along this strip (The Gran Via) you will find hotels, restaurants and bars.
Other places close by worthy of a visit is Santiago de la Ribera, Los Alcazares an old fishing village and the point at Cabo de Palos with its lighthouse.
The nearby city of Murcia is described as one of the most beautiful and historic in Spain. The city stands on the banks of a river and enjoys all year round sunshine. There is a great deal of Moorish influence in the city, not least of all the impressive city walls.
Murcia is a university city and the surrounding area has a wealth of lively bars shops and restaurants that are truly vibrant with life.
Los Alcazares is situated on the western shore of the Mar Menor, a saltwater lagoon separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a 22 Km long strip of land called La Manga. The area benefits from an average of 320 days sunshine per year.
There are numerous cafes and bars along the beach and in the town itself offering tapas, meals and entertainment. The warm waters of the Mar Menor are a paradise for bathers and water sport enthusiasts alike, and the mineral-rich water is well known for its therapeutic properties with thermal baths in the town dating back to Roman times.
Along the 7Km promenade you will find over 20 beach bars. There are also various places to hire sun beds, parasols, pedalos and bikes.
The local tourist office is well equipped with all the latest information regarding local events and interesting places to visit.
Los Alcazares is an old fishing and saltwater spa town ideal for relaxing, and active family/golf holidays. There are many excellent restaurants to enjoy and places to see. Although there is a variety of nightlife to enjoy the area is not brimming with nightclubs. There is however resorts such as Torrevieja within an affordable taxi ride away which cater for this throughout the season.
Roda Golf Course designer; Dave Thomas has created a course built to the highest specifications. The undulating fairways, strategically placed lakes and stunning landscaping make it one of the most sought after courses in Spain attracting an impressive list of professional tournaments so far.
The De Vere Hotels and Resort Group (famous for the Belfry, Ryder cup etc) are already managing the course and also signed up to manage the forthcoming hotel and commercial complex.
All the greens have been constructed in accordance with USGA (United States Golf Association) specifications. The first PGA Golf academy outside of the UK, with state of the art driving range, practice bunkers, putting green and areas designed for practicing approach shots will are also located at Roda.

"Fantastic family apartment."
We decided to take a family holiday to Roda beach and golf resort as we've been to murcia before and stayed somewhere else and decided this time to stay as we thought it looked lovely.
The owner from the start of booking was always very helpful and returned my emails when ever I had any questions about the property.
The apartment was everything we expected it to be from the write up. The only slight negative I would say the mattresses were quite hard. But everything else just right. size of the apartment, cleanliness of the apartment location of apartment to the pool.
You would need a car if you are planning to go out of the resort to local shops beach and restaurants. They are only a five minute drive but to walk would take about half an hour and in the heat would be too much.
We decided to venture out and went to terra nature (zoo and water park) great day out and la zenia shopping mall. Worth a visit as well .
Over all we would recommend and hopefully in the future would return ourselves.
