The Murcia region
Costa Calida " the warm coast"
The 250-kilometer long Costa Calida is situated in the southeast of Spain, between the Costa Blanca and the Costa de Almeria. The Costa Calida is situated entirely in the province of Murcia and begins in the north, on the border with the province of Alicante, with the white dunes of El Mojón in San Pedro del Pinatar. The Costa ends in the south to the lively town of Aguilas, bordering the province of Almeria, the most northern part of the autonomous community of Andalusia.
The capital of this province is the city of Murcia.
The Costa Calida offers you the typical Spanish atmosphere, where many other Costas are much more influenced by international tourism. The Costa Calida is synonymous with versatility. You can find a variety of water sports in the Mar Menor, "small sea", the largest natural world bath of the Mediterranean, with its characteristic wide sandy beaches and intimate, small rocky coves. But you can also go hiking through the many beautiful parks in the hilly interior of Murcia, with its wooded valleys. Impressive is the Revolcadores mountains in Caravaca de la Cruz, which is 2027 meters high. Other mountains which are worth to be explored are the Sierra de Espuña, Sierra del Carche, Sierra de la Pila and Ricote Mountains. The surroundings of the place Yecla is one of the major wine regions of Spain. What you should not miss the numerous fiestas full of color, light, music and tradition, such as the folkloric events, the carnival, the flamenco festivals and the traditional Easter celebrations during Semana Santa, with its solemn processions. Within the limits of the Costa Calida really everything is possible!
The Costa Calida, which literally means "warm coast" means, has a subtropical Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot dry summers. This coastline is bathed 320 days per year in full sun with an average temperature of over 18C. No wonder that the people most of the year a spring feeling. The Costa Calida is the World Health Organization declared a very healthy area. Especially people with rheumatism, skin diseases and painful joints benefit greatly from this pleasant climate.
Places of Interest (because the Costa Calida offers more than just beach and sun).
This outdoor natural pool known as very healthy due to the extremely high concentrations of mineral salts and iodine, and the influence of the strong sunshine. The average temperature in the Mar Menor is 5 degrees higher than the 2temperatuur in the Mediterranean. Parque Regional de Salinas de San Pedro: This area between El Mojón and Lo Pagan is a complex of lakes and ponds where numerous birds hiding. Enjoy hours of shuffling the deck landscaped paths and meanwhile look around at the various birds including flamingos. La Manga del Mar Menor which means: the sleeve. The Mar Menor is separated from the Mediterranean by a narrow spit of 22 km long, La Manga del Mar Menor. The beaches with their clear waters and sandy seabings make this place one of the most appreciated tourist areas of the Mediterranean Sea. A paradise between two seas, suitable for every possible water sport, which can be practiced in one of the many different water sports clubs and schools. On La Manga visiters have a choice of two seas. On one hand there are the warm calm waters of the Mar Menor, at Cala del Pino, El Galán or El Pedruchillo. And on the other hans the waters of the Mediterranean, with beaches like Punta del Estacio, Ensenada del Esparto or Galua. Also there are things being offered like golf courses, a casino, the Tomás Maestre marina, with over 1000 berths, magnificent hotels, recreation centers, all kinds of restaurants and a very lively summer nightlife in the area around the Plaza Bohemia and El Loco.
Los Alcázares is located on the shores of the Mar Menor, surrounded by the municipalities of San Javier, Torre Pacheco and Cartagena, with a permanent population of around 15,000 inhabitants.
It's main activity is tourism, the hotel of La Encarnación the most historic on the shores of the Mar Menor, Europe´s largest salt water lake, which multiplies the population in summer with holidaymakers, attracted by kilometres of soft sands, the warm and safe shallow waters and the opportunities to enjoy the superb watersports facilities.
Los AlcázaresThe Mar Menor is renown for its safe sailing and afternoon thermal winds, with kitesurfers and windsurfers taking advantage of the clean run from shore to shore, and learners enjoying the safety of an enclosed lagoon, whilst more experienced sailors can head out into the Mediterranean or charter yachts for exploring along the Murcian coastline.
Los Alcázares is also the location of the only surviving Balneario which is still in use today as a restaurant, a vestige from the days when bathers wished to maintain a level of decorum by descending into the waters from the privacy of a bathing hut, rather than baring all on the beach. This part of the beach is also the focal point for one of the most important gastronomic traditions of the region : the preparation of the intensely fish based dish of caldero, the staple Los Alcázares diet of the fishing population who fished from these shores before the onset of tourism.
Los Alcázares has been the chosen destination of Murcians from the capital for centuries, and celebrates the annual migration of the huertanos with its vibrant and colourful Semana de la Huerta y El Mar, filling the town with the scent of murcian tapas, the colourful costumes of folk dancers and a selection of artesan crafts from across the Region.
Los Alcázares also hosts one of the best mediaeval markets in the region, when it celebrates it's Berber fiestas, commemorating the raids by Berber Pirates which were such a feature of it's history during the 16th and 17th centuries.
