So if you are taking a sailing boat out, you do have to be careful of the sea floor. Even experienced sailors have been caught out. The area boasts up to 320 days of sunshine each year, over 3000 hours. It certainly beats the “grey” days of the UK. The temperature in the area averages 22 degrees rising to 29 degrees through June, July, August and September. The area is well known for Levante wind, which provides a cooling breeze at the heat of the day.
With all this glorious sunshine and warm water, the area is understandably known for a wide range of water sports, swimming, windsurfing, water skiing, jet skiing yachting and scuba diving. Boats, pedallos, jet skis are all available for hire. There is a Kite school on the beach of Los Alcazares, at the Los Narejos end, or northern area, which you can hire or have some training, they hold competitions at various times of the year.
Alternatively if you just want to sunbath there are over 73km of coastline featuring many beautiful, clean, sandy beaches. Those are in superb condition and receive “Blue Flags” all the time. Away from the water, interests such as golf in one of the 9 (could be more by the time you read this) championship golf courses that are all within 15 minutes drive, Roda Golf, La Serena, Mar Menor Gold and the 3 world-class 18 hole courses at the La Manga club, also with horse riding, cycling, and tennis. Or if you like walking you can visit the local towns and markets, we have a few, there is a local market on every day of the week, including Saturday and Sunday, selling fresh local produce direct from the farmers and all those kick-knacks you love to buy and take home, or take a bus ride to the historic city of Cartagena or Murcia
Also if you prefer to relax and take advantage of the water healing abilities, the area is known for its spa water beauty treatments. Due to their chemical qualities, the waters from the Mar Menor are renowned for having many medicinal properties. The high concentration of salts and iodines, the stillness of the water as well as being shallow, and of course its exceptional temperature in winter as well as in the summer, all blend together to form a unique combination transforming these waters into the best treatment against certain skin disorders and other ailments.
Lo Pogan area is famed for the healing properties of its “mud”; many swear that it has significantly helped their rheumatoid and arthritic conditions. Apart from being the largest open-air spa, the Mar Menor is thought to be one of the best places to organise regattas and to enjoy the other numerous water sports throughout the year. There are several boat clubs along the coastline and many marinas where you can hire or bring your own boat, yacht, or other sailing craft.
Coast/Beach
There are beaches nearby at Los Alcazares and also Los Narajos The beaches are on the Mar Menor (small sea) which is one of Europe’s largest seawater lakes, it is almost always warm, is non tidal and very safe for children.
The beach is fine white sand is very clean and has been just won a coveted European blue flag award.
Golf
