COSTA CALIDA – MURCIA REGION
The region of Murcia enjoys 320 days of sunshine each year.
Los Alcazares is well connected to the Spanish motorway network and there are regular flights from most European cities to San Javier airport (10 minutes from the apartment). Alicante offers many flights and is less than an hour away as is Corvera airport(due to open in 2013).
Within half an hour from the apartment you can drive to the beautiful cities of Cartagena and Murcia. A little further away, explorations can take you to La Manga (40 mins), Lorca (1 hour), Mazarron (1.5hours) and Valencia (3 hours).
If you prefer smaller towns or villages where you can explore the local markets, try Torre Pacheco, Santiago de la Ribera, San Pedro del Pinatar, Lo Pagan or the villages en route to La Manga via the coastal road, including Cabo de Palos, Los Urrutias and Los Nietos (all within 30 mins).
Cartagena
One of Spain’s oldest cities with history dating back 3,000 years, Cartagena remains a major commercial and naval maritime port.
Along with many noteworthy museums and historical buildings as well as excellent shopping and restaurants, Cartagena is a ‘must do’ for any visitors to the area.
Spend a day walking the city lanes or take an open bus tour, visit museums, view the roman ruins, wander around the open markets and the shopping areas, enjoy tapas at one of the many bars or try the local paella at the harbour side restaurants.
Murcia
Spend an enjoyable day, just half an hour from the apartment, visiting the historical buildings and museums including the beautiful Cathedral de Santa Maria, The Botanical Gardens as well as the upmarket shops and El Cortes Ingles (Spain’s equivalent of John Lewis).
La Manga
On the far side of the Mar Menor lagoon, lies a strip of land, 22 kilometres long and only 100 metres wide in some places. On one side you have the calm waters of the lagoon and the Mediterranean Sea on the other. Sandy beaches and numerous water sports encourage visitors to this fascinating resort.
Roda Beach club is at the far end of the strip and can be reached either by car or by water taxi from Santiago de la Ribera. Day trips are organised by Roda during the summer months. The Beach Club has a pool, jacuzzi, bar restaurant, water sports and fabulous loungers on the beach.
Lorca
A beautiful town of historical significance including Lorca castle which overlooks the area from a strategic location, Plaza de Espana and the Colegiata de San Patricio Church.
In 2011, an earthquake caused serious damage to parts of the city as well as killing 11 people. The town however, remains a lively and busy place with interesting museums and excellent restaurants and cafes.
Cabo de Palos
A recommended visit en route to La Manga, this beautiful fishing village attracts visitors all year round. The sea bed has been designated a Marine Reserve for its exceptional beauty and good state of conservation and is recognised as one of the best scuba diving sites in Spain. Many good restaurants surround the quaint harbour with its famous lighthouse, with fish as the speciality!
The Sunday morning market is a busy one with over 100 stalls selling local produce as well as homewares and leatherwear.
Santiago de la Ribera
Traditional Spanish seaside town with pretty beachside promenade overlooking a Blue flag beach. Nearby is Dos Mares, a modern out of town shopping centre catering for all retail therapy needs!
San Pedro del Pinatar and Lo Pagan
Just 20 minutes from the apartment, you will find the famous mud baths at Lo Pagan and nearby the Regional Park of Las Salinas.
The park is an important ‘wet land’ area and is home to pink flamingos, colimbos, gallinetas, sea gulls, herons, owls and the small ‘fartet’.
Thousands of people have visited the open-air mud baths, consisting of highly therapeutic clay, seeking alleviation of the symptoms of arthritis, skin problems and rheumatic illnesses. It is recommended that you combine the mud bath experience with the waters from the Mar Menor, which are high in mineral salts and iodine.
You can take a very healthy walk along the sea promenade – almost to La Manga as well as soak up the sun on the beaches in this area.
Torre de Pacheco
A large inland town is typical of this agricultural area. The best time to visit is a Saturday morning when you can wander through the busy and lively street market that has stalls selling everything from the very fresh local produce to leatherwear, clothes and household goods. Complete your morning visit with a leisurely coffee and traditional pastry at one of the many cafes.
The Los Alcazares / Roda Golf area
The local area of Los Alcazares and Roda Golf
Roda Golf
On site, apart from the renowned golf course, sports facilities include numerous swimming pools, tennis, paddle tennis, basketball, small football pitch
and many play areas with swings and climbing frames for the children. It should be noted that as Roda has security gates, there is a safe network of roads and paths for walking and cycling around the site.
The Clubhouse offers a relaxing restaurant and bar and free WiFi(though available in the apartment) and daily newspapers as well as a very good golf shop.
On the way to the Clubhouse from the apartment, you pass a small shop, which sells basic grocery provisions, wine, ice creams and English newspapers.
The Local Area
Within walking and easy cycling distance, the town of Los Alcazares
boasts a wide range of restaurants, including Spanish, Italian, Chinese and English menus as well as many coffee shops and wine bars. English is widely spoken in this area.
There is a tourist office, along with many shops catering for all your holiday needs, on the main walking street in Los Alcazares (starts at Mercadona Supermarket and continues almost until the beach). The Post Box sells stamps, newspapers and other items of stationery; it also has PCs with printers for Internet access and can arrange cycle and car hire. Explore the local area by cycle including the promenade that links the beaches of Las Salinas, Los Narejos, Las Palmeras, Espejo, Manzanares, Carrion and La Concha.
The wonderful Blue Flag sandy beaches make this a perfect holiday destination with clean, safe and warm water offering a wide range of water sports including sailing, kayaking, water skiing and windsurfing.
Take a coffee or lunch stop at the Hotel La Encarnacion, where you will find famous spa baths, go inside and through to the courtyard for an idyllic Spanish setting.
