The Costa Calida region

The Mar Menor is a salt-water lagoon of 128km sq with a sea temperature of 5 degrees above the Mediterranean. The area enjoys an average of 320 days sunshine a year. The mineral-rich water of the Mar Menor is revered for its health-giving properties and is listed by the World Health Organisation as one of the healthiest places on earth. The Mar Menor is also considered as one of the best areas for sailing, windsurfing and jet-skiing which can be practised all year round.
The historic Mediterranean port city of Cartagena is 15 miles away. There is much to see and enjoy here with evidence of ancient architecture dating as far back as 227 BC including a Roman amphitheatre dated around 1 BC and the original 13th century cathedral. There's also a Museum of Maritime Archaeology and the city centre offers a fine array of shops interspersed with Roman relics. You can even peer down through a glass pavement and see the ancient cobbled street below.
Music and other festivals are an important feature of Cartagena's culture; in July the city hosts the world music festival 'La Mar de Músicas', while there's the International Jazz Festival in November, and in September the city's colourful history is brought to life in the form of the festival of 'Carthaginians and Romans'.
The Los Alcazares / El Divino area
Los Alcazares boasts 7 kilometres of blue flag beaches ideal for bathing and watersports. The town is bustling in the summer months and is peaceful for most of the rest of the year but there is plenty to see and do all year round with over 300 days of sunshine annually. There are various festivals held in the town each year, the most notable is the Water Festival in October, which the whole town attend, this consists of wind surfing races, barbecues and music of all kinds throughout the day.
Los Alcazares has one of the most beautiful beaches on the Costa Calida. Its palm lined promenade stretches about 4 Km to Los Narejos and is Blue Flag all the way. Los Alcazares promenade is very popular for evening strolls and cycling. The town still has thermal baths, which have existed since Roman times and he bay is famous for visitors with rheumatic, arthritic and skin problems, at one part of the beach there is a natural mud bath which is revered for its therapeutic benefits.
There are many beach bars and playgrounds for young children along the promenade. There is a water centre on the beach which is a haven for water sports such as Jet -Ski's, kite surfing, sailing boats, parasailing, canoeing and fishing.
Bicycles are available to hire locally. For more information see www.los-alcazares.com. The Mar Menor has three excellent golf courses at hand, and also a driving golf range 10 mins drive away. There are three water parks and a zoo a short drive away.
There is a wide choice of bars and excellent restaurants within walking distance, offering authentic Spanish, Italian, English, Chinese, Thai and Indian food at very reasonable prices. There is also a large supermarket within walking distance of the complex and a number of takeaways.

My wife and I stayed in this penthouse apartment for nine nights in October. This was our first visit to Los Alcazares but we are already planning to return. On the El Divino complex, this accommodation is modern, comfortable, secure, and convenient. The owners have obviously put a lot of thought into ensuring that their guests have an enjoyable holiday. The layout is both practical and flexible. Facilities in the living area, bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchen are all of a high standard but for me the bonus was the large and private rooftop solarium with loungers and furniture. Los Alcazares appears to have no hills at all and the apartment is in an ideal location to easily access shops, restaurants and the amazing local beaches. It is a two minute walk to the town square and the Mercadona supermarket which provides good quality food and drinks for those who prefer to self cater. At the same time no-one need miss out on their favourite English fare. Beyond the square and on the plaza (towards the bottom and on the right hand side) is Arkwrights. This is a store run by Ian and Sue, a friendly couple from Derbyshire. They stock a good selection of English brands at very reasonable prices. Also, unlike the supermarkets, but in keeping with their tv namesake, they are indeed "Open All Hours". For those who don't want to cook the plaza offers everything from snacks to a la carte and a variety of cuisines. Away from the plaza but still only a five minute walk from the apartment is the Chang Jiang Chinese retaurant on Avenue de la Libertad. This does delicious food at unbelievable prices. A typical menu of the day is starter, main course, + tea, coffee, or ice cream for 6 euros! The apartment is a few minutes away from the beach which runs for miles in either direction. The promenade is dotted with beach bars and restaurants. The sands are clean and the water warm and shallow. I would not hesitate to recommend both the apartment and the resort. |
