The Limerick/Tipperary region

Lorrha is centrally located making it a ideal base from which to explore the countryside, it is 2 hours from Dublin, 1 hour from Galway & Limerick & Cork is just over 2 hours away. Portumna is the nearest town & also the gate way to Lough Derg & the river Shannon.

Portumna also has a forest park with over 70km of walking & cycling trails, a castle built around 1618. Birr town is a 20 minute drive, there you can visit its castle & gardens covering 120 acres, its famous telescope which was the largest in the world for over 70 years & the historic science centre.

Lorrha was once a large monastic settlement & has 3 abbeys still standing dating from the 10th century. There are 2 castles nearby, Redwood Castle is open to the public during July & August & Lackeen castle, a ruin, can be visited any time, ideal place for a picnic !.

The Friars Lough is only a 20 minute walk, good for fishing or use our rowing boat for a leisurely trip. Bicycles & the rowing boat are provided free to guests.

There are several walks within easy reach by car & 2 looped walks from the cottage which take you along quiet roads, through part of our farm & along a disused railway line.
