The Midi-Pyrenees / Ariege region
There are beaches on the west coast with Biaritz and on the East coast with Narbonne both are approximately 2.5 hours drive away. In the mountains there are a number of lakes with `beaches' which are ideal for swimming and sunbathing the nearest is about 20 minutes drive away.
The ski area of Guzet Neige is approximately 40 minutes drive away. It is a very pretty resort with a lift served area extending from 1200 metres to 2100 metres. There are 33k of lift served runs and 3k of cross country and a snowpark also there is a children's area with swings and an area for sledging. There are a number of shops, bars and restaurants serving good quality food, there is also a ski hire shop and ski lessons are available. As keen skiers ourselves we can recommend the resort, it is uncrowded and very friendly and when the snow is good and the sun is shining a wonderful place to ski or snowboard. For beginners it is an easy place to learn, for intermediates there are plenty of runs to tackle and for the expert there are a number of challenging blacks. The non skier can enjoy snowshoeing or walking in the beautiful scenic area or just relaxing with a hot chocolate and watching the world ski by.
Lorp-Sentaraille area
Places of interest are all around the region, the mountains a 30 minute drive away.
The small quiet village of Lorp is very unspoilt with old French houses and farms. Cattle and sheep graze in the meadows whilst the red kites fly overhead. In the village of Lorp are 2 restaurants a boulangerie, a pharmacy and a shop selling regional foods. In St Lizier (5k) are 3 supermarkets, a DIY shop, a clothing and shoe shop, a sports shop, and 2 hardware shops. There are also a couple of tool shops and 2 petrol stations.
The nearest town is St Girons approximately 3km away (a five minute drive). The Tour de France is due to pass through St Girons on the 11th of July. There are a number of bars and restaurants, a cinema, shops and banks. There is a market every Saturday morning selling fruit and vegetables, flowers plants and shrubs, clothing, cheese, wine, meat, bread and cakes, hot food and local delicacies. Often there is live music, jugglers and other entertainment. You can hire bicycles and obtain fishing permits in the town. You can also find the tourist information and the post office.
