The Marche / Abruzzo / Marche region

Le Marche is a beautiful, unspoiled and relatively undiscovered region of Italy that offers bountiful sun, mountains, lakes, grottos, sea coves and beaches. Located in north-central Italy on the Adriatic seaboard, Le Marche is accessed easily via the international airports at Ancona, Bologna to the north, and Pescara to the south.

Le Marche is renowned for its quintessential medieval hilltop towns and villages, historic remains, and its glorious renaissance architecture. This region is still dominated by agriculture, and being undiscovered by mass tourism offers an insight into real Italian life. This fascinating part of Italy conceals a wealth of art, architecture, museums, castles, forts, Roman antiquities, good food, high-class wines, and offers a wide range of outdoor activities from skiing and horse riding to climbing, walking, mountain biking and paragliding.

Loro Piceno area

Casa Tranquilla, our converted Marchigian yellow-brick farmhouse, enjoys a sunny south-facing aspect just below Loro Piceno in the south of the region. We are in the province of Ascoli Piceno, not far from the provincial city of Macerata that boasts an annual music festival in August. Here at Loro Piceno you are within easy reach of the beautiful beaches of the Adriatic and the dramatic Sibillini Mountains, which separate Le Marche from the neighbouring region of Umbria.

Our farmhouse is at the side of a quiet country lane with hardly any traffic, and provides uninterrupted views across the valley to nearby villages. It is set in 15 acres of arable land that is normally planted with wheat or sunflowers. It comes with the "obligatory" small vineyard that produces the local “vino cotto” speciality (a sweet dessert wine), and a stand of olive trees.

There is much to see and do in the area including the show caves at Frassassi, the World Heritage town of Urbino, the many medieval towns and villages with their abundant festivals including music at Macerata and Colmurano and a host of speciality events in all the villages. You can swim in the Adriatic sea or the freshwater Lake Fiastra, climb, walk and paraglide in the Sibillini mountains, or take a more leisurely look at ancient Roman remains or the works of the notable Italian artists. Place lake Rome Venice, Bologna, Assisi and Perugia are all possible to include in a day out.

Our two apartments are each of 115 square metres gross floorspace, and have been furnished and equipped to a high standard. We provide several electric fans for the warm weather, underfloor heating for the winter and a log-burning fire in the ground floor apartment. The spacious rooms feature beamed ceilings and cotto tile floors. We have provided a good selection of DVDs, board games, magazines and tourist information including walking guides and maps.

Further details outdoors:
Within the garden there are vines that provide grapes for the local "vino cotto" dessert wine as well as many olive trees and several fruit trees. There is a timber summer house near to the 12 x 6 metre swimmig pool that includes a cold shower, toilet and hand basin. There are more than enough parking and turning facilities for several cars. The house has a fine, sunny southerly aspect with extensive views to nearby villages and the countryside.
