The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Vaucluse region
Provence boasts 300 sunshine days per year. Whilst the winters can be cold they are generally crisp and clear. There are many beautiful places to visit - pretty hilltop villages, spectacular gorges, the bustling City of Avignon with its Palais des Papes, pavement cafes and shops or places like the Abbey de Senaque, which in July/August is a beautiful sight with the Lavender in full Bloom. Mont Ventoux, the giant of Provence, is a must see from whichever way you approach and scale it. The Cote D’Azur is just over an hour away by car. This will take you to the pretty resort of Cassis with its bustling harbour and beach and the opportunity to take boat trips around the coast towards Marseille along the Calanques. Nice, Cannes and the Italian border all lie along the southern coastal motorway, eastwards, and are accessible on a day trip. To the west are the wild Camargue flatlands, Montpellier and the Spanish border. Lovers of Roman history will be spolit for choice. Nearby is the famous Pont du Gard, the spectacular amphitheatres at Orange and Nimes and the ruins at Vaison La Romaine.
Loriol Du Comtat area
For lovers of spectacular scenery there is the nearby Dentelles and the Gorge de La Nesque. Perfect for walking and cycling alike. Further away (2 hrs) is the world famous Gorge de Verdun, the largest canyon in Europe. It rests on the east side of the Lac de St Croix. The Ardeche gorge and river is just 45 minutes north up the A7. For wine lovers there are the vineyards of Cotes du Rhone all around. A few of the more popular wines are Chateau Neuf du Pape, Cairanne, Gigondas, Vacqueras and Beames de Venise. All are a very short drive from the house. There are a multitude of vineyards to sample in each of these areas as well as many further afield. You will be spoilt for choice. Rose is a particular favourite in the area. The ski resort at Mt Ventoux offers skiing of all standards in the winter. This mountain dominates the area.
