About the home

Les Mimosas is a 200 year old Charantaise house, recently renovated to an exceptionally high standard. Located on the edge of Lorignac overlooking vineyards and open countryside with the Gironde estuary in the distance and the local bar restaurant and village shop just a few minutes walk.

It has a large garden, ample parking, flowerbeds and large grassed area. Separately fenced area with 10 x 5 m private heated pool. The house retains original beams and exposed stonework and has been beautifully decorated in a French style but in a contemporary manner.

The house is all on one level and its lay out is highly suitable for two families sharing. It comfortably sleeps 8 plus an infant. It has full central heating and a wood burning stove making it suitable for winter lets. Fans in all bedrooms and living room help keep it cool in the summer heat.

Property all on one level with only one step down to access 2 bedrooms and 2nd shower room, so suitable for people with mobility difficulties but not for wheelchair users due to doors' widths.

Main bathroom has a 'bateau' bath and large wet room style shower area.

Large veranda with tables and seating for 8 overlooking the garden. BBQ and outdoor table tennis.

Additional veranda to the side of the house, which is a sun trap. Additional table and chairs.

The heated 10 x 5 pool has an alarm and is in a separately fenced area with a gate that can be padlocked. Typically the pool is between 27 and 30c, depending on weather. Sun loungers for 8 and umbrellas for those who prefer the shade.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region

The Gironde estuary enters the Atlantic at Royan marked by the Phare de Courdouan (Lighthouse) with boat trips from Meschers and Royan. Regular ferry services run from Royan over to the Medoc.

The Parc de l'Estuaire at St Georges de Didonne, is a nature reserve and information park with views of the estuary, walks, cycle paths, an exhibition centre, restaurant and snack bars.

Meschers is lively with shops, restaurants, and markets and boat trips on the estuary from the port. There are walks along the cliff tops and you can visit the two sites of troglodyte cave dwellings Regulus and Matata.

Talmont, is a beautiful little village with its church of Saint Radegonde. Explored on foot to see artists and craftsmen, narrow streets ablaze with flowers and entertainment. The carrelets; traditional fishing cabins with their suspended nets, can be seen from here.

There is much wildlife in the area; foxes, badgers, several varieties of deer and sanglier (wild boar) and a huge array of birds.

Mortagne Sur Gironde, has a picturesque port below and a town above with shops, post office, tourist office. The port area is very lively with numerous events, and fetes together with brocantes, bars and restaurants. There is horse riding and hiring kayaks and boats.

The Lorignac area

The nearest beautiful sandy beach is Meschers (28km) about 20-25 minutes drive away. Between here and Royan (35km) the estuary is lined with more superb sandy beaches, both lifeguard protected and more secluded sandy coves. Parking is plentiful and free to provide easy access on foot to the beaches themselves.

For surfers this is the Atlantic coast with renown surfing beaches from Cote Sauvage to the north and Soulac on the other side of the Gironde. Water sports abound on the coast.

Local villages regularly have markets selling local produce and brocantes during the summer season.

Nearby, Port Maubert has a restaurant and walk down to the edge of the estuary.

Vitrezay nature reserve is a marvellous day out. Paths lead out into the marais through the wetlands with observation hides. It has an exhibition centre and throughout the season are various different entertainments and special events. There is a restaurant-bar and you can take a boat trip over to Pauillac, with a visit to a famous wine chateau with a meal.

There are a number of activities including fishing in various forms, canoeing, sailing or going out in a sea kayak. Trips out on a gabare and you can even rent a genuine carrelet by the hour.

Just south of here is Blaye, at the start of the Gironde Estuary, with some superb Chateaux.

Bordeaux itself is just 50 minutes drive away and is a beautiful city to visit with many fine shops and restaurants. Sainte is a picturesque town just 40 minutes drive with a Roman amphitheatre, shops and restaurants. Cognac is a similar distance with visits to the distilleries available.

There are three 18-hole golf courses in Charente-Maritime.
The Prée Golf Course at La Rochelle, the Maine Gaudin course near Royan, at Saint-Palais and the Louis Rouyer course at Saintes. In addition to these three courses, there are six further courses here – three 9-hole courses at Rochefort and on the Ile de Ré and Ile d’Oléron and as many 6-hole courses at La Jarne, Montendre and Saint Porchaire.

Deposit of 20% payable on booking and the balance 12 weeks prior to arrival. We try to be helpful with legitimate or unavoidable cancellations and if we re-let the period we will happily refund your payment less our direct costs.

A returnable deposit of £300 is payable 3 weeks prior to arrival, to cover accidental damage to or at the property (we accept the occasional broken glass as part of holiday life). As appropriate, this is returned the week after departure.

Any exceptional additional cleaning required is not included in the rental price.
