The West Country region

This is an ideal base from which to visit Cornwall’s attractions, the Eden project, Lost Gardens of Heligan and the fishing villages of Looe and Polperro. There are many National Trust houses and walks nearby plus coastal path walking, fishing (fly, coarse & sea), golf and diving. HMS Scylla in Whitsand Bay has created the UK‘s first artificial reef. Across the River Tamar via the Torpoint ferry or Tamar Bridge is Plymouth, home to the National Aquarium, historic Barbican and Plymouth City for shopping. The Theatre Royal brings new productions to Plymouth in the autumn and winter months.

Looe

Downderry Beach of coarse grey sand and shingle lies just to the east of Seaton and just down the hill from Pebbles. At low tide a narrow strip of a beach about a mile long leads east from Seaton to the eastern end of Downderry although if attempting this please be aware of the state of the tide. There are excellent coastal walks east over Battern Cliffs to Portwrinkle or back west along the narrow road with care to Seaton.

This is a sheltered beach made of grey sand and shingle with rock pools at low tide. There is a good pub right on the beach, the Inn on the Shore, and cars can be parked in the village centre. A small slip road gives access to the beach for those launching boats.

The wreck of ‘Gypsy’, the sister ship to the ‘Cutty Sark,’ is hidden under a kelp bed not far from the shore line waiting to be discovered for those into snorkeling! Oh and if you get lucky you may see some dolphins in the bay.

"Superb value, very good location. Very satisfied."

Location is in Downderry, a short walk to the beach, and very close to village store and pub. We tried this as an alternative to staying in Polperro and were very happy with our choice. Pity we didn… More
