The West Country / Cornwall region
Washed by the Gulf Stream, The Duchy of Cornwall lies on the western tip of England, with Celtic roots and its own language, and mild climate it has been a great favourite for holidays for 150 years. Long days and warmer summers, a lush green landscape and a dramatic coast line with clean beaches provide the perfect holiday destination for all ages.
The Eden Project, The Lost Garden of Heligan and a wealth of National Trust properties, provide days out when those fishing trips are complete and the delicious pastys and Cornish clotted cream teas have all been eaten.
The Looe area
The town of Looe, divided by the Looe river, is a busy fishing port with trawlers, line boats and shellfish fleet, has its own fish market receiving boats day and night. It has an unpretentious charm and an excellent range of facilities.
The historic twin towns of East and West Looe started as a mediaeval port but much of what we see now has
developed from the fishing industry and 19th Century tourism. Visitors first started to discover Looe over a
century ago.
East & West Looe are divided by the river and harbour and joined by the bridge and small passenger ferry boats. East Looe has a lovely sandy, safe beach fronted by the promenade, with all the facilities of the town just behind the beach it makes for an easy relaxing day out.
Beyond the main beach in both East & West Looe the golden sand gives way to rocks & rock pools.
Adjacent to East Looe beach is the unique Banjo Pier, where you can stroll or just sit and watch the world go by.
The town has numerous restaurants, pubs and cafés to cater for all tastes. In particular if you like to eat fish, there are few better places in Cornwall than Looe, where the fish is landed at the local fish market just hours previously by the fleet of trawlers. You can enjoy fish and chips whilst sat on the quayside or sample a filling
Cornish pasty from one of several traditional local bakers.
Cornish ice cream is plentiful. In Looe you will find award winning ice cream in many yummy flavours.
A long history as a port and fishing village means Looe has plenty of pubs. In West Looe we have the Jolly Sailor - one of the oldest pubs in the county, full of character and a beam from a French ship of the line captured at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805 is still over the bar. Boats used to moor alongside the Jolly
Sailor at this time and was the first beach embarkation point when Sir Francis Drake defeated the Spanish Armada.
Looe is rightly proud of its history and development from an ore exporting centre to now as a major tourist centre in Cornwall, welcoming visitors from britain and around the globe.
