The Franche Comte region

Franche Comte is a region full of lakes, rivers, mountains and forests. The proximity to Germany, Switzerland and Italy gives it a unique cultural mix. The architecture and history of the region are both full of interest. The Jura is little known in the UK and yet has some of the most interesting towns and beautiful villages in France. The region is a sanctuary for those who love the outdoors and offers clean rivers and lakes for swimming and endless forest tracks for walking and cycling.

If you like walking or bicycling, swimming, wild flowers or other wild life, or just sitting in a cafe or restaurant, you will love this unusual area almost unknown by many British people. Vineyards abound, good food and wine is widely available either to cook and eat at home or in any number of good restaurants and cafes. Wander through medieval villages like Chateau Chalon or abbeys like Baume Les messieur or along the bank of a clear stream or river.

Lons le Saunier

The area around our house is an eco valley full of meadows, woods and steams so wild flowers and birds abound. The hills behind the house are full of beautiful paths which are clearly marked and join the local communities. The house is on the edge of a friendly village, beside a trout stream and is in a peaceful, quiet corner. There are lots of good restaurants round and about from ones with several Michelin stars like M.Jeunnet at Arbois to our favourite Grande Jardin in the adjoining village. The local cheeses and wines are delicious and some are famous the world over. Our favourite cheeses are Compte and Morbier and the Vin Jaune and Vin de Paille from nearby Chateau Chalon are famous the world over. The villages of Baume les Messieurs and Chateau Chalon are both among the most beautiful villages of France and have a long and distinguished history.
