The Cumbria/Lake District

Only 5 miles away from West House is the historic city of Carlisle with its modern city centre rich in heritage; a wonderful combination of culture, history and the great outdoors. It is surrounded by acres of parkland and has some of our finest countryside right on the doorstep. Also nearby is Hadrian's Wall, built nearly 2000 years ago by the Emperor Hadrian. Today it is a World Heritage Site with a National Trail Path that allows walkers to travel along its entire 80 mile length; a great way to discover more about the region.

This great border city has had a turbulent past, leaving a legacy for today's visitors to experience. Carlisle Castle was founded in 1092 by William the Conqueror's son and became one time prison to Mary Queen of Scots. Later it was captured by Bonnie Prince Charlie during the ill fated Jacobite rebellion of 1745. Other places to visit include Carlisle Cathedral and the award winning Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery. So if you're looking for secluded country walks, city art galleries, forts and museums, stately homes and castles, you'll find it all here!

Longtown area

Longtown is a very good location for tourists looking at border history. There is a great deal of history around Longtown, which lies at the heart of the "Debatable Lands" and is close to the location of the Battle of the Solway Moss.

Arthuret Church, which is on the outskirts of Longtown, dates from 1150. It was originally served by the monks of Jedburgh. The present Church, dedicated to St Michael and All Angels was built in 1609 in a late Gothic style. The site of Arthuret parish church is strongly linked to the legend of King Arthur!

Longtown, with its attractive 18th century bridge, makes a good starting point for walks along the River Esk and through the surrounding countryside.

The Solway Firth became a handy place for smugglers to land their contraband goods. Now it's popular with birdwatchers looking for wading birds and wildfowl. A 60-acre country park, Oakbank, outside Longtown offers fishing, a bird sanctuary, lakes, and walks.

Closer to home, the following amenities are available near the property:

Nearest Bar/Pub: Grahams Arms - 0.25 miles
Nearest Restaurant: Grahams Restaurant, Fish and Chip Shop, Chinese Takeaway, Kebab Shop -0.25 miles
