The Reading Room on a winter's night

House | 4 bedrooms | sleeps 10

Key Info
  • Great for children of all ages
  • Some pets are welcome - please contact the owner
  • Private garden

The Reading Room is a recently converted barn. It used to be a coaching stable and was then converted into a Church Reading Room, where the local vicar would read the bible to his parishoners. After many years of falling into disrepair it was finally converted into a holiday cottage in 2013.

It is located in the tranquil village of Long Compton, half way between Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon, within the Cotswolds area of outstanding beauty.

It is rented on a weekly basis only between April and October, but during the winter months we do offer weekends or mid week lets.

Inside The Reading Room it feels light and airy. The decor is contemporary and the furnishings stylish unlike many holiday cottages where pine and chintz seem to reign. The space is ideal for large family gatherings or for two or three families to experience the Cotswolds together. Inside there is a large open plan kitchen / dining room / sitting room and four double / twin bedrooms (2 of which are ensuite, whilst the other 2 share another bathroom). There are two folding beds providing space for an extra two children, which can be set up in any of the bedrooms. Outside there is plenty of parking and a private garden with large patio area, outside dining table and 14' trampoline.

On the Ground Floor is:

The Main Room, consisting of the kitchen, dining room and living room.

The Kitchen

... beautifully presented with oak units and granite worktop. It has everything necessary to cook for 10. Oven, hob, fridge / freezer, additional freezer, microwave oven and dish washer. There is plenty of storage for all the cooking implements as well as crockery and cutlery for 10.

The Dining Room

...has a stylish table and comfortable chairs for 10

The Living Room

... has luxurious sofas, a swivel chair, 42" television, Wii with games and a contemporary wood burning stove.

Family Bathroom

... with double ended bath, central taps, sink and loo.

The Garden Bedroom

... is a twin room with french doors leading out to the patio and garden.

The Front Bedroom

... furnished with contemporary solid oak furniture, contains a king size double bed and has a splendid ensuite bathroom.

The First Floor:

The Mezzanine Bedroom

... the largest of the bedrooms with contemporary dark wood furniture, king size double bed, balcony over looking the living room and beautiful ensuite bathroom

The Oriental Bedroom

... is enchanting in its design with chinese styled furniture and a king size double bed.

NB The sofa beds mentioned below are foldaway beds and only suitable for children, so the Reading Room can accommodate up to 8 adults or 10 if there are at least 2 children.

"Lovely building, but..."

Lovely building and great location. However, I question whether the owner has the place professionally/actively cleaned between lets or whether you get it as you find it. We found toothpaste splats al… More

Thank you for your review. I'm sorry that the Reading Room was not to your satisfaction, I only wish you'd told me of your complaints at the time rather than wait a year to post your grievances in your review. At the time you told us of what a lovely week you all had.

I can reassure you that the Reading Room was definitely cleaned before your stay. With regards to the 'toothpaste splats', I can only assume that you mean the marks on the tiles in the downstairs bathroom which are an intrinsic part of the design and are definitely not 'toothpaste splats'. To be fair someone else commented on these markings as being like soap marks, but they're not, they are just a feature of the wall.

I agree with you that we do suffer from dust due to the stone walls and all the polished surfaces in the Reading Room showing it up. There are two high window sills which require scaffolding to be set up to allow us to clean them. Unfortunately this cannot happen when the Reading Room is booked solidly from one week to the next, there simply isn't enough time. Your stay was towards the end of a long run of back to back bookings and so they could not be cleaned until we had a break. The same applies to dismantling the big sofa.

Being a self catering holiday cottage, we do not on the whole provide supplies. We do however supply the essential kitchen cleaning supplies, tea towels and a roll of loo paper for each loo. Other than those we leave it up to the individual to bring whatever they wish to bring for their stay. Similar with towels, we supply a bath towel per guest and a hand towel per bathroom. For those who want their towels changed more often we supply a washing machine so they can be cleaned and refreshed. It is after all a self catering holiday house and not a hotel with maid service!
