The Castilla/Leon/La Rioja region

Situated in a cultural cross road La Rioja is bordered by the Basque Country (province of Álava), Navarre, Aragón (province of Zaragoza), and Castile and León (provinces of Soria and Burgos). The Río Ebro flows through this region, as does the Río Oja, for which it is known.

At Yuso, in the village of San Millan you can find the earliest examples of both the Spanish and the Basque languages. They were written on the margins of Latin Mass texts probably to help the priest translate for the people of the village.

La Rioja is part of El Camino de Santiago and you will find many opportunities to visit examples of this religious influence. From the Yuso and Suso Monasteries in San Millan to La Redonda Cathedral in Logrono, Monasterio de La Piedad in Casalarreina, Monastery of Santa Maria La Real in Najera or the Monastery of the Virgen de Valvanera to name a few.

And there is of course the Rioja wine. There are many vineyards you can visit to try and buy some wine. We recommend Lopez de Heredia in Haro (tel: 0034 941 310 244). The tour in English to their gorgeous vineyard by the river Ebro is free, and last time we checked they let you try any wine you want at their shop.

And last but not least, the Fiestas:
11 June - Logrono - San Bernabe with a beautiful medieval market
25 Junio - Haro - San Felices - The Wine Battle
10 August - Ezcaray - San Lorenzo
17 August - Navarrete - San Roque
21 September - Logrono - San Mateo - probably the biggest fiestas with the pressing of the grapes in the main square, offerings to the Virgen de Valvanera, bull fighting, theatre, concerts, etc....
But remember that every single village will have its own fiestas at some point during the summer.

Logrono area

The capital of La Rioja, Logrono, is a lovely city with a beautiful historic centre. Look for the Laurel and San Juan streets to try some amazing tapas or Portales to have great coffee outside.

With only 150,000 people, Logrono is a small province city that has everything within walking distance. Shopping is fantastic, Logrono being one of the Spanish cities with more shops per square metre (c/ Doctores Castroviejo or the Gran Via).
It also has some great restaurants such as:
- El Cachetero - Laurel St
- Tahiti - Laurel St
- Matute - Laurel St
- Tagliatela - Avenida de Portugal St
- Chatilla de San Agustin - San Agustin St
and lots of bars to party until late at night on Plaza del Mercado, La Mayor Street or Vitoria St.
There are some discos/clubs but they are quite dispersed. Ask anyone at any of the bars for the closest after hours club.

After a few minutes drive, you can practice golf in La Grajera or some horseriding at Club Hipico Equus.
There are some vineyards in the actual Logrono but you can also visit many others by driving a few miles to Haro or Elciego. If you happened to be there in the winter you could practice some skiing at Valdezcaray, about 40 min drive from Logrono.
