The North Norway region
Norway is the northernmost country in the world to have open waters. This is due to the trade winds forced across the Atlantic Ocean by the American continent and the warm currents flowing north from the Equator towards the Norwegian Sea.
Norways climate fluctuates greatly from year to year, especially in its most northern parts, which are located at the edge of the global temperate zone. The lowest minimum temperature recorded is -51°C in Kárájohka-Karasjok in Northern Norway. The average annual temperature swings from some 8°C along the western coast to below freezing in the mountains. The coldest months of the year are January and February and the warmest time in the inland areas is mid-July. The coastal and mountain regions may reach their peaks somewhat later.
The climate in Norway differs from that of the rest of Scandinavia. The tall mountain ranges dividing mainland Norway provide protection from precipitation to large areas of inland eastern Norway. This gives the area a more continental climate than would be expected in light of its proximity to the coast.
Some of the areas east of the mountains have an annual rainfall of less than 300 mm. Most of the precipitation from the sea falls along the west coast of Norway, with some areas recording a maximum rainfall of 3000 mm annually.
The most important agricultural areas have an annual rainfall of between 500 and 1000 mm, with most rain falling in July and August. There are about 100 rainy days in inland Norway and some 150-200 rainy days on the coast. The strength and direction of the wind in Norway varies greatly as a result of fast-moving pressure fronts, and the winds along the coast and in the mountains are often quite strong.
Lofoten area
Lofoten is the archipelago to the west in the ocean, north of the Arctic Circle, at the 67th and 68th degree parallels. The principal islands are Austvågøy, Gimsøy, Vestvågøy, Flakstadøy, Moskenesøy, Værøy and Røst. The total land area amounts to 1,227 sq. km. About 24.500 people live there. The road distance is almost 170 km. Lofoten streches like a wall of mountains to the southwest in the sea. Lofoten consists of mountains and peaks, wide open ocean, sheltered inlets, strectches of seashore and large virgin areas. Due to the warm Gulf Stream, Lofoten has a much milder climate than other parts of the world at the same latitude, such as Alaska and Greenland. The coastal climate in Lofoten makes the winters mild and the summers relatively cool. Lofoten has very interesting geological features. Transformed rock, which was formed approxim. three billion years ago, is predominant. These are some of the oldest rocks on the earth. The mountains of Lofoten, however, were not formed until the last Ice Age, which ended about 10,000 years ago. When the ice withdrew, rigid edges and peaks were left behind. Lofoten has an abundant selection of birds. We meet birds from the forest, moors, highlands, sea and ocean, and many species which migrate past Lofoten every spring and autumn. The white-tailed eagle flourishes in Lofoten. Fishing has always been the very foundation of life in Lofoten. This is due to the close proximity to the fishing grounds. "Skrei" (spawning cod),which is caught during the winter fisheries, is the most important. Lofoten has a rich and varied selection of plants.
In the areas to the west and the north of the Lofoten islands the midnight sun is visible from 27 May till 17 July. Good place to see the midnight sun are: Hov - GIMSØY
