The Scottish Highlands region

The north west Highlands of Scotland offer some of the most stunning sightseeing opportunities in the U.K. Achmelvich Beach is only one of the many unspoilt sandy beaches in the area - Clashnessie and Clachtoll being the beaches close at hand.
There are many coastal walks and remote sandy bays, giving you the chance to discover the sea life that inhabits the coastal waters warmed by the gulf stream. Minke whales, dolphins, basking sharks and seals are not uncommon.
Spectacular mountains are waiting to offer you the most beautiful panoramas, with walks or climbs of all grades - Stac Pollaidh, Suilven, Canisp and Quinag to name just a few.
Sunsets are a speciality in this rural and remote part of the world.
Geologically the area has the oldest rocks and the highest waterfall in the UK, and is just oozing history and legends. The North West Highlands Geopark in Assynt is here, covering a substantial part of Sutherland and the Coigach area of Wester Ross. The boundary stretches from Cape Wrath in the north to Ben More Coigach in the south, and from the coast in the west to the approximate line of the Moine Thrust in the east.
Lochinver is the nearest village, two miles away, and there are many small townships scattered throughout the area. Boat trips to Handa Island bird sanctuary or to Kerracher gardens are available. Information regarding all types of fishing and all grades of walking and climbing, along with additional information on activities like cycling, kayakking, horse riding, adventure days or day trips are available from the award winning tourist information centre in Lochinver.
The scenic town of Ullapool is under an hour's drive away where you can take the 3 hour ferry to Stornoway or visit the Summer Isles.
The Lochinver / Badnaban area
Visit the bone caves at Inchnadamph. Trying canoeing and other outdoor activities, or just relax on the beach and find out more about the seashore in the countryside rangers hut and contribute to their collection of shells and fossils.
There are rare plants to be found, and a pictish broch to explore nearby at Stoer.
'On The Rocks' is situated on the road to Achmelvich - it stocks pictures and artists' materials and also gives courses in water-colour painting and gemstone cutting. The duration of these courses can be either 3 hours, all day or for 3 days.
There is a leisure centre with gym and internet access in Lochinver and a swimming pool complex in Ullapool. The local village hall also provides live music from time to time and doubles as a theatre. There are several restaurants including fine dining at Inver Lodge and The Albannach (recently awarded a Michelin star!). You will find a petrol station, pubs, shops and a supermarket there too.

Well equipped and spacious home with views directly across the loch and out to sea. Sandy beach is about a 15 minute drive away but our children aged 7 and 2 were more than happy with the rocky one at the bottom of the garden, the sea is crystal clear and with wet suits on they spent most of their days in it. Numerous rock pools to explore, grassy cliffs to climb and mountain streams to play in they had an excellent time. My husband fished from the rocks every evening and caught Pollock whilst watching the glorious sunsets. The only noise to be heard is the very occasional cry of a seagull. We drove to the lighthouse and saw dolphins, there were seals and otters in the bay outside the property and lots of deer. |
