The Scottish Highlands region
Often described as 'the last great wilderness in Europe', the west coast of Sutherland is one of the Highlands' best kept secrets, a truly magical landscape of majestic mountains, trout-filled lochs and white sandy beaches. Take one of the many peat tracks into the hills and you will find yourself able to walk for miles in seclusion with only the highland cows, red deer and eagles for company.
Glencorse is set in Drumbeg, a hamlet of some 40 residents which the Sunday Times has praised as being 'as close to the idyll of a west coast village as you are likely to find.' The region offers peace, wide open spaces and hidden beach coves and inland valleys with plunging waterfalls, many small lakes ("lochs") and is largely untouched by human development, with plentiful wildlife, glorious hiking and excellent fishing.
The Lochinver / Drumbeg area
Throughout the summer there is a full programme of ranger-guided events which take place in the Drumbeg area: regular favourites include 'The Old Man of Stoer', 'The Drumbeg Peat Road Walk', 'Clachtoll Sand Sculpture Competition', 'Achmelvich Coastal Walk', 'In search of Black Throated Divers' and 'Whale and Dolphin watching at Stoer Lighthouse'. Bird watchers will want to visit nearby Handa Island, perhaps fitting in a visit to the highest waterfall in Britain along the way. Also in the summer, The Assynt Highland Games are held in Lochinver during August.
For nature lovers, there are many rare birds and animals including sea eagles and you may be fortunate enough to see an otter or a pine marten. Glencorse's visitor guide will tell you where to find the nearby seal colonies.
For fishing folk the local ghillie (gamekeeper) can offer both trout and salmon fishing (but this does need to be booked well in advance). Other local activities include a well stocked trout lake at Lagg Fishery (10 minutes by car) and Llama Trekking at Stoer.
We also arrange meditation/yoga retreats twice yearly and the house can also be booked as a retreat or holistic holiday venue.

I simply cannot rate this property highly enough - excellent does not do it justice. From the moment I entered I felt entirely at home. Cleanliness was superb, the facilities were awesome (think luxury hotel and then some) and it honestly felt as if the owner wanted all guests to feel like family. The kitchen is to die for - Aga, huge family table.all the appliances you could possibly want and a view through the huge windows that took my breath away every morning. Steam shower was great after days of walking and climbing, the snug (where we lit a fire in the evening despite it being August just to enjoy the atmosphere) was a haven of peace and the number of bathrooms meant that no one ever had to queue which I eased my aches with a long hot soak. I have already booked my return trip for this year. |
