The Central Scotland / Strathclyde / Argyll and Bute region

This area of Scotland is known as Argyll, and is renowned for its wild and rugged scenery. Peppered with sea lochs (tidal inlets) and miles of often remote coastline, it is a favourite area for both locals and tourists alike. Visitors enjoy both the natural history of the land and numerous castles and historic monuments. Many regard the sailing waters to be amongst the best in the world.
Driving through the many historic towns brings a variety of interesting curio shops, museums and unusual visitor attractions such as the underground power station at Loch Awe.
The area is also renowned for its food and produce, with Loch Fyne Oysters being one of the many products known the world over. And much of this within an hour or so of some of the best shopping in Scotland, in Glasgow. Or an easy day out to the Scottish Capital, Edinburgh.
The Lochgoilhead area
Lochgoilhead, although only around an hours drive from Glasgow, has a remote, relaxed feel to it. Situated within the Loch Lomond National Park, the village is a paradise for walkers, water sport enthusiasts, those who love 'the great outdoors', and those who are just looking for somewhere to crash out!
Due to the fact the village is at the end of the road, there is very little through traffic, couple this with good amenities at the local hotels leisure centre, the village is very popular with young families during the traditional holiday periods. The village has also become popular with retires, many who visit to enjoy the tranquillity, or have retired to the area, often having enjoyed decades of memorable holidays in the village.
While some never leave the'valley' during their stay, many use the village as base to explore the west coast, either down through the Kintyre Peninsula, or north to the Oban area. Whatever your choice, active or relaxed, Lochgoilhead is a wonderful place that often captures the hearts of those who visit.

Lochgoilhead is situated just over an hours drive from Glasgow Airport. It is a small rural village, situated at the head of a sea loch (tidal lake) in stunning fjord like setting.
From Glasgow M8 motorway head past airport and follow signs for the Erskine Bridge. Over the Erskine Bridge follow the A82 for Loch Lomond.
Drive alongside Loch Lomond on the A82 until Tarbet (Note - There are several Tarbets in Scotland!)
At Tarbet keep left onto the A83 passing through Arrochar.
Several miles after Arrochar you will start to climb a very significant hill. This is known as the 'Rest and be Thankful'
At the top of the hill there is a car park and viewpoint, and a small road signposted 'Lochgoilhead' .

The cottage was peaceful & idyllic, as described. Nicely presented, clean & tidy. Lovely private gardens with a wonderful view over the loch. There were opportunities to walk the dog somewhere different every day and swim in the loch, all without much need for his lead. He loved it!! The village was small with only the bare essentials - just what we wanted. The local restaurant (Shorehouse Inn) served lovely food and was only an amble away so no need for the car. We were warned by the owners in their advert about the steps to get to the front door, which were a good workout each time, and it was a shame we couldn't get down to the loch from the garden with the dog (humans only down the ladder), but neither of these things could take away what a fantastic little place the owners have in Dunmhor. |
