Cottage | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4
This lovely, traditional, end-terraced cottage is set in an idyllic location on the banks of the Crinan Canal in Cairnbaan in Argyll on the west coast of Scotland. Cairnbaan is situated about half way along the Crinan Canal which leads from Ardrishaig on Loch Fyne to Crinan on the Atlantic coast. This is an excellent location for walking and cycling, particularly along the Crinan Canal tow path but also along the many nearby woodland tracks. The Cairnbaan Hotel is only 10 minutes walk from the cottage and serves high quality locally sourced food in the bar and restaurant.
There are lots of attractions and activities to see and do in the local area, including walking, cycling (including mountain bike trails), ancient Standing Stones and Cairns at Kilmartin Glen and Museum, boat trips to the world famous Corryvreckan whirlpool and also wildlife and whale watching trips, enjoying the spectacular scenery, visiting castles (Inveraray and Dunstaffnage) and spectacular gardens (Crarae and Arduaine).
If you like going to the beach, you can cycle or drive to Crinan Ferry (about 4 miles) where you will find a lovely sandy beach and great views. The Mull of Kintyre is a lovely area to explore and has some fantastic sandy beaches suitable for picnics, body boarding and the world-famous Machrihanish Golf Course (Great Scottish links collection). You can also catch ferries for day trips to the islands of Islay and Jura (famous for their whisky distilleries), Gigha and Arran.
There are two adult mountain bikes available for use - additional bikes can easily be hired from Lochgilphead. A good route is to cycle or walk along the Crinan Canal tow path from Cairnbaan to Crinan (about 4.5 miles), here you will see the yachts entering and leaving the canal. At Crinan, there is a coffee shop serving lovely home baking and light refreshments and the award-winning Crinan Hotel - renowned for its excellent seafood restaurant. There are many other cycling/walking routes detailed in the cottage guest information.
Inside the cottage there is a kitchen/diner and a lounge downstairs. The kitchen has been newly fitted and includes an electric oven with ceramic hob, fridge freezer, microwave and washing machine. Off the kitchen is the dining area, with a table and four chairs.
The cosy living room has an open log fire, a 2 seater sofa, 2 chairs and a window with views over the canal and surrounding countryside. There is a TV/DVD, WiFi, stereo, video and Play Station 2 with a small library of DVDs, videos and PS2 games. There is also an under-stair storage cupboard.
Upstairs is a bathroom with over bath shower and two bedrooms. The main bedroom has a double bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers and great views over the canal and surrounding countryside. The second bedroom has twin beds, a chest of drawers and views out to the woodland to the rear of the cottage.

"Terrific holiday in superb location"
We thoroughly enjoyed our 7 day holiday in July 2013 at Cairnbaan Cottage. The cottage is spotlessly clean and well equipped with everything you need for an enjoyable stay. We were lucky enough to have a week of glorious weather so made good use of the garden furniture for dining al fresco while watching the boats sailing past the bottom of the garden. We used the two adult bikes for various trips along the towpath and also to the lovely village of Tayvallich for lunch. The Cairnbaan Hotel serves good food and is only a short stroll along the canal. Cairnbaan Cottage is a good base for visiting various places including Oban, and the islands of Islay, Jura and Gigha. We had never been to this area of Scotland before but will definitely return and stay at the Cairnbaan Cottage in the future.....that is if its available as we have already recommended it to many of our friends!!

"Cosy cottage by the Crinan Canal, Scotland"
Attractive, well equipped cottage. Ideal situation for walking the dog and riding the bike. I enjoyed watching the boats sail by the window.

"A fantastic little cottage in a beautiful and unspoilt location."
The accommodation consists of an end-terraced two bedroomed whitewashed cottage right on the bank of the Crinan Canal. The owners are very friendly and helpful and go out of their way to make sure your stay is as comfortable as possible, to the extent of providing scones or cakes when you arrive which is always very welcome after a long journey. We have stayed at this accommodation three times now in the last two years and this Christmas we will be going again, we like it so much. We almost feel like it is a second home to us! Our two boys who are 8 and 14 also love it there, particularly because there is a PS2 in the property with a selection of games, and I am told there is now Wi-fi too. There are also board games and a selection of books. The property itself is not large but it feels like home. The galley kitchen has everything you need to make meals and even do some baking, we have never wanted for anything. There is a washing machine and the oven is an electric fan oven and a ceramic hob over. The only thing missing is a dishwasher but to be honest there just isn't room for one. The cottage has an open fire which is always welcome in the evenings, even in the summer, and there is additional electric heating in all rooms. The location is perfect, right on the banks of the Crinan canal and we love to see the yachts and boats going by as they negotiate the numerous locks on the canal. There is a tow path which goes all the way from Ardrishaig to Crinan which is great for cycling. There are two adult mountain bikes provided at the cottage and the cycling in the Knapdale area is fantastic, especially for children as there are not too many hills in the immediate area (bring your own childrens' bikes or hire them locally). There is a beach at Crinan Harbour (not to be confused with Crinan itself) which is supposed to be good but to be honest whenever we've been there we've found it to be muddy so we didn't stay long. Further afield there is Tarbert which is a traditional fishing village, and at West Loch Tarbert you can catch the ferry to Islay and Jura, and there are ferries to Arran too. There are two good hotels in the immediate area, the Crinan Hotel which does good seafood I am told, and the Cairnbaan Hotel. There are also more hostelries in Lochgilphead and Ardrishaig. There is a good-sized Co-op at Lochgilphead where you can buy everything you need, even fire wood. There is a lot of history in the area dating back to neolithic times, with numerous sites of standing stones, burial mounds and cup and ring marked stones. You can take boat trips from Crinan to see the Corryvreckan whirlpool on the Sound of Jura, or go whale watching or fishing. If you like spinning for mackerel the pier at Tarbert is the best place but beware of the seals who steal your catch off your line if you're not careful! In short, Cairnbaan Cottage is an ideal property for small families who like the outdoors and we will definitely be back!

"Great Cottage, Great Location"
We stayed here for 10 days, the cottage is equipped with everything you could want. The location is absolutely brilliant on the banks of the Crinan canal, we walked every day. The local area abounds with good pubs, cafes and restaurants. We only wished we had booked longer. This will certainly be our base every time we come to Scotland.
