The Loire Valley region
Loire Valley (French: Vallée de la Loire) is known as the Garden of France and the Cradle of the French Language. It is also noteworthy for the quality of its architectural heritage, in its historic towns such as Amboise, Angers, Blois, Chinon, Nantes, Orléans, Saumur, and TouLrs, but in particular for its world-famous castles, such as the Châteaux d'Amboise, Château de Villandry and Chenonceau.
The landscape of the Loire Valley, and more particularly its many cultural monuments, illustrate to an exceptional degree the ideals of the Renaissance and the Age of the Enlightenment on western European thought and design. The Loire Valley is an outstanding cultural landscape of great beauty, containing historic towns and villages, great architectural monuments, its many châteaux, and fine wines
Loches, capital of the southern Touraine region, is a medieval city
Places to visit:
- Medieval city of Loches
The construction of the fortress of Loches is attribued to Foulques Nerra and goes back to the XIth century. 36 metres high, it is considered to be one of the most impressive keeps of the Norman period. The Gate House, the XIVth century Governor's lodge, Louis XI tower topped with its early artillery emplacements, Cardinal Balue's dungeon, the torture chamber... together with video projections and the computer generated images all combine to give you a "first hand" experience of the medieval period.
Discover the garden (medieval style) at the foot of the keep.
- the castle of Bridoré, a magnificently preserved feudal fortress. Between the lower courtyard, where the soldiers and servants were lodged, and the upper courtyard where the Lord of the manor lived, is an impressive 30-metre-high keep crowned with watchtowers.
