Home description
Comfortable apartment in a picturesque village with a variety of shops, bars and restaurants within a couple of minutes' walk. Professionally designed using high quality fittings and fully equipped for year round stays, with central heating and woodburning stove for the colder months and cooling fans for balmy summer nights. Masses of space for two couples travelling together, but also ideal as a romantic getaway for two (or even as a base for househunters looking for a taste of the French life before taking the plunge). One of the owners is a keen angler who is always looking for an excuse for a day by the river and is happy to share his local knowledge. The kitchen has everything necessary for the keenest of cooks but dinner can also be provided for indulgent evenings. Choose from the menu or request particular favourites.

The Loire Valley / Indre-et-Loire region
The Loire Valley was favoured by French royalty and aristocracy for hundreds of years and their legacy can still be seen in the glorious parks, chateaux and gardens, many of which are now maintained as historical monuments open to the public. They provide a fascinating insight into France's past. The climate here is fairly similar to Britain's, but with generally warmer summers and milder winters. There are wonderful opportunities for outdoor pursuits like fishing in the regions many lakes and rivers and walking on the well maintained “Sentiers Pedestres” which sound much more glamorous than the English footpaths. Tours, capital city of the region of South Touraine, is a great cultural centre which also provides shopping and dining opportunities for all tastes and budgets. Touraine is famous for its wine, from the reds of Chinon to the "Methode Champenoise" fizz of Saumur and visits to vineyards for "vente et degustation" (sale and tasting) are widely available.
Loches / Preuilly sur Claise area
The "Abbaye" in the address is the 11th century abbey which provides the apartment's view and gives the whole of Preuilly sur Claise heritage status. The village itself is a lively place with a good range of shops, including two excellent bakers, a small supermarket, pharmacy and post office, as well as a variety of places to eat and drink. Like many French villages, Preuilly has its own customs, such as the Saffron Festival in February, and everything stops a couple of times a year for the traditional brocantes and vide-greniers (literally attic-emptying) . British visitors make a particular bee-line for antique bedlinen for a fraction of the cost of new and much less characterful examples.
There are lots of markets all year round, with Loches having one of the best every Wednesday and Saturday morning. The fish, bread, meat and fruit and vegetable stalls appear winter and summer alike and the flower and plant stands in the Marche des Fleurs have to be seen to be believed. During the summer many extra stalls appear selling a variety of goodies, such as traditional quilts (“boutis”). You will be given a price, but it is sometimes worth a bit of gentle haggling. After a morning’s shopping try lunch at Bistro Balto in the middle of the market. It is always buzzing with both locals and visitors and serves good, reasonably priced food at lunchtime. For a bit more glamour try dinner at “L’Entracte” or “Gerbe d’Or”.
