The Scottish Highlands region
From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the rugged landscapes of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. The beautiful countryside of Dumfries and Galloway is littered with fortresses and strongholds, testimony to its dramatic history. Moving north, the Highlands are to Scotland what the Pyrenees are to France, with equally breathtaking scenery and fantastic opportunities for walking and mountaineering. Aviemore and the Cairngorms National Park are particularly famous for skiing, whilst Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain at 1343m, is a firm favourite for those seeking a challenge.
For the less energetic, the Whisky Trail provides a unique way of exploring many of Scotland’s attractions and for quieter moments, there’s always Loch Ness and a chance to spot the elusive monster! Scotland also has some of Britain’s best and cleanest beaches. Cromarty is famous for its bottle-nosed dolphins and Nairn, whilst claiming to be one of the sunniest and driest places in the country, has glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam.
Several islands lie off the Scottish coast, each with their own character and heritage, however the Isle of Skye is probably the best known and most visited. As the largest of the Inner Hebrides, Skye’s turbulent geological past has bequeathed it a stunning coastline. Experienced walkers are drawn to the Black Cuillin Mountains, whilst those less experienced have an array of lower level coastal walks from which to choose or alternatively, visitors can take some time to visit Skye’s capital, the charming harbour town of Portree.
The Lochailort / Glenuig area
The Sound of Arisaig is a Marine Conservation Area, which is home to Glenuig village that faces west towards the little Isles of Eigg, Muck, Rum and Canna. Maerl, which is a type of seaweed only found in unpolluted waters, and other intriguing flora and fauna can be found in this unspoilt area. Gelnuig is a tiny community with a population of just over 30, and is situated in the Parish of Moidart in remote and secluded West Lochaber, which includes the neighbouring settlements of Samalaman and Alt Ruadh. There are only 25 dwellings in the village – and four of those are holiday homes. If you’re looking for a peaceful antidote to the hustle and bustle of modern living, this is it.

A friendly welcome with lots of information. A very good location to get away from the faster pace of life. Lovely walks, scenery and wildlife. Very peaceful. Nice to have an open fire. Thank you.

,The setting was ideal for us - close to the water for kayaking and great cycle and walking routes all round. The property was well equipped for cooking for larger numbers and drying everything out!

,A lovely cottage in the most perfect of surroundings. The nearby beaches were of the highest standard and deserted at this time of the year. The garden was enclosed with a sturdy fence which meant that the puppy was secure at all times giving us peace of mind when sitting outside sipping our glass of wine!
