The Scottish Highlands region
The Highlands, in the far north of Scotland, is made up of six smaller regions: the North Highlands; Inverness, Loch Ness & Nairn; the Cairngorms National Park; Moray Speyside; Skye & Lochalsh; and Fort William & Lochaber. Being such a beautiful area with a dramatic landscape, this region is great for outdoor activities and wildlife. There are also a variety of attractions and much great scenery to explore from mountains to beaches, rivers to islands. A beautiful and inspiring region with a fascinating history, ancient landscapes and a long list of things to see and do. Explore famous lochs, breathtaking beaches and magnificent glens, witness battlefields and ancient monuments, admire local arts and crafts, try almost every outdoor activity you could think of and marvel at the beauty of a remarkable range of wildlife.
At the southern end of loch Ness, Fort Augustus is a pretty village and a good place to pause and watch life on the Caledonian Canal as the boats negotiate the series of locks.
Loch Ness is famous around the world for the small matter of its monster, Nessie. Aside from that, Loch Ness is Scotland's largest loch in terms of volume, being 23 miles long and in some parts more than 700 ft deep.
Claimed sightings of the Loch Ness monster over the years form the focus of the award-winning Loch Ness Exhibition Centre at Drumnadrochit. You can explore the interactive displays that allow you to uncover the mystery and folklore surrounding this loch.
A great way to appreciate the scenery of Loch Ness is by taking a cruise to Urquhart Castle, a spectacular ruin where the excellent visitor centre explains the history of this once important Great Glen fortress.
Fort Augustus is an excellent centre for exploring the Highlands, by road, or nearer home on foot and on cycles, centrally located, the sking centre of Aviemore can be reached in an hour, Skye and the west coast in under two. The great glen way a cycle and walking route passes close by.
