The Scottish Highlands region
Strathnairn's cultural heritage is a fascinating blend of ancient Gaelic culture and a contemporary Highland way of life. Close at hand, you can take relaxing walks on the extensive nature trails specifically designed and built for our guests to explore the rivers, hills and woodlands on Dalvourn Farm. These trails also lead onto forest roads taking you miles into the Strathnairn hills. Our mountain bike hire service makes it easy and cheap to take advantage of this freedom.
Nearby is the Peter Tyler Craftshop and Woodturning Workshop gaining its inspiration from its surrounding natural environment. A few miles further up the Strath is Brin Herb Nursery, with the dramatic Brin Rock as a backdrop. En route to Loch Ness you can visit a number of beautiful lochs including Farr, Ruthven, Duntelchaig and Ashie, which support a large variety of bird life including the Slovenian Grebe. Once at Loch Ness, you can visit Urquhart Castle and do some serious monster spotting by taking a cruise on the Loch. Cruise lengths vary from 1 hour to a whole day.
The Loch Ness / Farr area
To the west, following the Great Glen of which Loch Ness is a part, Ben Nevis - Britain's highest peak at 4,406 feet - towers over the town of Fort William. To the east, is the golfing town of Nairn and is renowned for its sandy beaches. The exciting new Culloden Battlefield visitor centre which opened in December 2007 is only 8 miles away and well worth a visit. Further east is Speyside, home of more than half of Scotland's distilleries. Visiting the famous Malt Whisky Trail can be an excellent way to learn more about Scotland's whisky heritage. To the south, the Cairngorms National Park - Britain's largest at 1400 square miles - has the greatest expanse of near-natural vegetation in Britain. Its rugged beauty and many Munroe's make it a hill walker's delight. Aviemore ski centre is situated on the edge of the Cairngorms and offers some of the best slopes in Scotland. To the north, stands Dunrobin Castle which is the most northerly and arguably the most majestic of Scotland's great houses. For the avid traveller, a day tour to the Orkney Isles leaves Inverness at 7.30am and includes a visit to Skara Brae.
Of special interest for children would be the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre, the Strathspey Steam Railway and the Highland Wildlife Park all close to Aviemore, as well as the Wildlife Park on the Black Isle.
