The Wee Residence (www.theweeres.co.uk) is a bijou little cottage style apartment for two situated on the 'quiet' side of Loch Ness.  With its attractive lounge complete with open fireplace, a modern kitchen/dining room, shower room and double bedroom it offers ideal and spacious accommodation for couples wishing to explore the heart of the Highlands.  The accommodation is all on the ground floor, with small, fully enclosed gardens to front and rear.  The property is situated close to the banks of Loch Ness and there are some spectacular walks in the immediate vicinity. A myriad of paths meander through natural woodland, with little 'secret' lochs to be discovered.  Just a stone's throw away is the dramatic Falls of Foyers, recently used as the setting for the film Centurian.  Beautiful forest walks leads through to the small villages of Upper and Lower Foyers, with a café and shop and directly down to the shores of Loch Ness. The area is renowned for its red squirrel population, which are regularly encountered in the area.   Deer, pine marten and a wide variety of birds can also be seen close by.  This is a fantastic area for the outdoor enthusiast.  Kayaking, canoeing, sailing, fishing, golf, cycling, walking and horse-riding are all enjoyed locally. The nearby historic village of Fort Augustus is truly charming. Its focal point is a picturesque series of lock gates which give access to boats from the Caledonian Canal to and from Loch Ness.  The wide tow paths and pretty lawned areas along the side of the canal provide an ideal vantage point from which to sit and watch the numerous small crafts navigating the locks.  There is a variety of good cafes and restaurants here, as well as an interesting and unusual selection of small shops.  Fort Augustus is situated half way along the Great Glen Way, which runs from Fort William to Inverness along the side of the canal and provides superb cycling and scenic walking along its 73 mile path.  Mountain biking is very popular in the area and the recently opened Laggan Wolf Tracks provide some wonderful and stretching downhill runs for all. The new Loch Ness trail opened in 2011 also offers wonderful walking and cycling.

DIRECTIONS

Most people coming to Inverness-shire fly to Edinburgh or Glasgow and hire a car from there.

If coming North from these cities you will be traveling on the A9, the main artery North. You will not need to go all the way to Inverness but can turn left just before DAVIOT on the B851 marked FORT AUGUSTUS. Keep going until you reach a fork in the road and turn left towards ERROGIE, GORTHLECK. Keep going past the village of Gorthleck and after a couple of miles turn right along a small road to FOYERS. Keep going until you reach the Cameron teashop. You will see a row of white houses just beyond on higher ground. Keep going and turn right where the bus stop is and round a sharp corner and The Wee Residence is the second on the left. Post code IV2 6XY

If coming from Inverness, follow the B862 on the SOUTH side of the river Ness. Proceed to DORES (10 miles). Take the right hand side fork and keep going straight on for approx 10 miles along Loch Ness until you reach UPPER FOYERS. Pass the Foyers Falls cafe, pass the playground on the left and turn left between the playground and the bus stop. Go round a sharp corner and The Wee Residence, no50, Glenlia, is the second on the left. Post code IV2 6XY

The Scottish Highlands region

Welcome to Scotland's Highlands and Islands, a magical land of immense natural beauty, where the scenery will take your breath away, the flora and fauna captivate, and the attractions and activities excite and appeal.

From the mesmerising glow of an eastern shore sunset to the raw beauty of a west coast mountain range, and in all the vastness around and between, can be found wonderful, exhilarating adventures or peaceful, energy-restoring experiences - whichever your wish, or need.

And whether wandering across miles of deserted, silver sandy dunes in the shimmering sun on an island seashore, being thrilled by an outdoor enthusiasts’ paradise in one of our rugged mountain ranges, standing thigh-deep in waters of the greatest salmon rivers in the world, following whisky, castle, coastal or Pictish trails, exploring the folk tales, history, drama and romance of this ancient land or simply sitting by a peat fire with a dram in your hand, you could not have chosen a better region to appreciate than this one. Thanks to an ever-expanding air service and a comprehensive rail and ferry network, the area can be travelled in comfort, and drivers will often find that they have many of the roads away from the busier centres to themselves - apart from the odd sheep.

Few places in the world offer such a wealth and diversity of natural beauty, activities and attractions, but this is one of them.

Loch Ness

South Loch Ness

If you fancy getting away from the crowds and escaping to wild, natural landscapes, then head for South Loch Ness.

Easily accessed from both Fort Augustus and Inverness, South Loch Ness is an area of outstanding natural beauty with heather covered hills, sparkling lochs, deep dark forests and panoramic views that will take your breath away. With such a beautiful and wild landscape it is little wonder that many people come to the area to walk and see the rich diversity of wildlife and flora. Many of the walks are way marked, particularly those in the Inverfarigaig, Foyers and Whitebridge areas, providing excellent safe routes for visitors to experience the area and enjoy wonderful views over Loch Ness. The famous Falls of Foyers can be enjoyed by all ages.

Alternatively, why not try the Trail of the Seven Lochs, a 50 mile loop taking in much of the area’s outstanding scenery. This trail is best enjoyed on horseback or for those looking for more challenging walking. With so many quiet roads, the area is also ideal for cycling.

The area is rich in wildlife – The RSPB site at Loch Ruthven is a must for keen bird watchers but across the area, look out for ospreys, golden eagles, red kites and black grouse. The area has a good population of roe deer, red deer and sika deer but you might also see badgers and pine martin and, especially in autumn, red squirrels.

In or around the small villages of Farr, Croachy, Dores, Inverfarigaig, Foyers, Gorthleck and Whitebridge you will find local artist’s studios and craft shops as well as a number of welcoming places to eat and drink.

Walking, cycling, fishing, horse riding or just searching for peace and tranquillity in a wonderful environment, South Loch Ness has it all.

hi! thank you for your review and so glad you had a good time. I have looked into the wifi idea but unfortunately I don't really feel that I can afford the expense on top of the bills (those storage heaters are atrocious) and the cleaners, repairs etc... Had I been a much bigger self catering with relative charges I would certainly do it. However, the Foyers falls and the Cameron tea shop, just a stone throw from the house, both offer free wifi and I believe that quite a few people managed to get it through open BT or 3G. I do hope that that will not stop you from coming again! All the very best. Enrica.
