BookThe Scottish Highlands region
The Highlands of Scotland is a land of mountains and lakes virtually untroubled by the modern world. A place where nature still dominates and where eagles and wildcats still roam freely and with a rich history of clans and ancient battles of the Celts who live here to this day. The Highlands now is a civilised place and welcoming to visitors who drive, ride or fly into Inverness, the Highland capital. People come from all over the world to visit the spectacular castles, visit whisky distilleries, taste the fabulous cuisine and learn about the turbulent history of the Scottish clans in places like the Culloden battlefield. Most of all though, people visit the Highlands for the dramatic scenery and to experience the natural beauty that is unrivalled anywhere in Europe and which is unique to Scotland.
The Loch Ness / Fort Augustus area
Loch Ness at Fort Augustus, known locally as the 'Gateway to Loch Ness' as it is situated at the southern end of the lake and is an ideal location for touring both sides of the loch. Inverness and Fort William are both within an hour's drive. Nearby you could choose to cruise on Loch Ness or the Caledonian Canal, visit the ruins and exhibition at the famous and historic Urquhart Castle or investigate the Culloden battlefield where Bonnie Prince Charlie was defeated at the last battle to be fought there. Many walks and cycle ways in the area suit all levels of fitness from challenging hill walks to gentle canal tow-path walks.
