Home description

The Ferry Inn was built in 1896 by the 4th daughter of Queen Victoria, HRH Princess Louise. Princess Louise was married to the Marquis of Lorne who later became Chief of Clan Campbell. The architect of the home, Sir Edwin Lutyens, is one of Scotland's most famous architects. He became the architect for India, designed the British Embassy in Washington, D.C., as well as countless homes and monuments in England and Western Europe.

The Central Scotland/Edinburgh region

The house is about one hour north of Glasgow International. The weather is usually mild due to ocean temperatures. There is always a breeze from seaward. It is in the foothills of the Troschach National Forest. Arrochar, 15 miles away, is where the Vikings landed and provides some of the most interesting and challenging hiking terrain. In the village of Rosneath there are the ruins of a church widely believed to have been established by St. Modan in the 12th century. Inverrary Castle , one hour's drive, is the ancestral home of Clan Campbell and home to Princess Louise while she was married to the Duke of Argyll. Rob Roy's mother was a Campbell and the castle has on display several effects, dirk, belt and writings, that belonged to Rob Roy. Also, there are paintings and a sculpture by Princess Louise at the castle.


Loch Lomond National Park / Arrochar area

Ferry Inn sits at the tip of the Rosneath Penisula jetting out into the Firth of Clyde on Loch Gare. The Inn enjoys 700 metres of private beach. There is fishing off the beach. You can also hire sail boats at the local marina, hike in nearby Arrochar, and pony trekking . There are two bicycles available for use. Sailing, kayack and windsurfing lessons are also available within walking distance.

The property is situation on 1.5 hectres of private gardens and provides unequal views of mountains and sea. The peaceful scenery,as well as the meticulous restoration of this Grade 1 listed property, would provide a welcome retreat to any family or group during summer holiday or Christmas time.

Ryan Air from Ireland, Easy Jet from Europe - 45 minutes from Glasgow International - Prestwick 1 hour 30 minutes, Edinburgh 2 hours. Train - London to Glasgow - Glasgow to Helensburgh Central. Ferries from Ireland Stena Lines.

There is hiking and rock climbing in Arrochar which is 15 miles away. Fish off the shores of your own private beach. Take a sailing lesson or rent a sail boat at one of the many marinas nearby. You can also rent a kayac or wind surf on the loch. There are two bicycles available for cycling. There is a bicycle trail that runs along Loch Lomond. You can rent additional bikes there. Helensburgh and Rhu are closeby and have several gourmet restaurants as well as pub dining, coffee shops and entertainment. The train from Helensburgh Central takes you into Glasgow Queen Street Station where your can shop at John Lewis, House of Fraser and many other nice shops and take in a movie or admire the wonderful architecture in the city.

For golf enthusiasts, Loch Lomond, site of the Scottish Open is less than 20 minutes away. A new championship course next to Loch Lomond, The Carrick, has just opened this season, June 2007; Helensburgh Golf Club was designed by Old Tom Morris and Cardross is a well known local moorland course. Troon, Prestwick and Turnberry are easily accessible in a day and return. St. Andrews, Carmoustie and Muirfield can be played and return same day.

The Carrick Golf Club has just opened an incredible spa and workout room. Ladies pamper yourself for the day with a massage, facial, pedicure, manicure, lunch, etc. while your husbands play golf. Their goal is to be named the number one spa in the UK! Their facials are unbelievable!!! Only 20 minutes away.

Hill House, a Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed home, is located in nearby Helensburgh and the house and gardens are opened daily. Stirling Castle is about an hour's drive, Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, and Holyrood Palace, where the queen stays when she is in Edinburgh for Parliament, is two hours away. Roslyn Chapel, which was made famous by the DaVinci Code, is located just outside of Edinburgh.
