The Central Scotland/Strathclyde region

Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park

The National Park encompasses around 720 sq miles (1,865 sq km) of some of the finest scenery in Scotland and is split into four distinct areas.

It is a place of contrasts from rolling lowland landscapes in the south to high mountains in the north, and has many lochs and rivers, forests and woodlands. It is also a living, working landscape which has been influenced by people for generations and is visited and enjoyed by many for its recreational value.

The Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park became fully operational on 19 July 2002 and was officially opened by Princess Anne on 24 July 2002.

Key Facts

The Park is 1,865 sq km (720 sq miles) and has a boundary length of 350km (220miles).

50% of Scotland's population lives within an hour's drive of the National Park.

There are 21 Munros (mountains above 3,000ft) in the Park and the highest is Ben More at 1,174m.

There are 19 Corbetts (mountains between 2,500ft and 3,000ft).

There are 22 larger lochs, with numerous smaller lochs and lochans.

About 50 rivers and large burns.

15,600 people live in the National Park (2001 census).

There are two Forest Parks – Queen Elizabeth in the Trossachs and Argyll in Cowal.

Loch Lomond National Park

Loch Lomond

Ben Lomond stands guard over Loch Lomond, the largest expanse of freshwater in Great Britain and the romantic centrepiece of the National Park. In the north the loch is deep and narrow, bound by steep-sided mountains. Further south it spills into an island studded panorama.

Tarbet

Tarbet is on the west shore of Loch Lomond a short distance from Arrochar. Like Arrochar this is a popular stop on the West Highland Railway for walkers, cyclists and climbers alike.

The road north splits at Tarbet, one branch leading west into the equally beautiful county of Argyll and on to Oban (gateway to the Isles). The other leading north besides the Loch and on to Glencoe and Fort William. Both roads served by regular bus/coach services from Glasgow.

The railway station at Tarbet serves both Arrochar and Tarbet, and is on the Glasgow Oban or Fort William routes. This small hamlet also has cruises run by Cruise Loch Lomond Ltd which leave from Tarbet pier daily. It ialso possible to take Seaplane trips from the loch.

Nearby - Railway Station 200 metres - 2 minutes walk to local Restaurant and Bar - 5 minutes walk to Tarbet Tea Rooms, Hotel Restaurant/Bar, Tarbet Pier and Loch Lomond Cruises, picnic area and visitor's centre by the loch. 2 minutes drive (15 minutes walk)/bus ride to Arrochar for local shops, doctor, pubs, restaurants etc.

Clan MacFarlane - between the cottages and The Ballyhennan restaurant is a burial ground where several of the MacFarlane clan chiefs lie.

We have recently had the lounge, hall and stairs re=carpeted with MacFarlane hunting tartan. There is a book and other information in the cottage about this local clan.

"Could not have wished for a better location or a more comfortable stay."

The cottage was comfortable, homely, spotless and superbly appointed, with a wide range of local information provided. The location was perfect, with excellent local amenities, fine walks, and a short stroll to Loch Lomond for boat trips. We also made use of the nearby station to spend a lovely day exploring Glasgow. Plus there were numerous places of interest within a comfortable and scenic drive. I cannot offer a single criticism and thoroughly enjoyed my visit.
