Can Tesset: affordable tourism
House | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 12
Can Tesset is a warm village house, completely rebuilt, that we have enabled as a holiday apartment. It's placed at the center of Castellserà, a little village in north of Urgell shire, Lleida province in Catalonia. The village is just in the middle of the road from Tàrrega to Balaguer (we can reach both cities by car in only 15 minutes).
Is an excellent choice for groups (or couples) that want to keep low the expenses of their holydays. For a group of 4 people: a weekend costs only 190 €, or the five labour days costs the same, and the whole week only 430 € ! For other options please check our web. The maximum capacity is 12 guests. Remember that we rent the full house to a single groups, not single rooms. It's perfect for six people who can sleep in the three bedrooms, but for larger groups we have a little loft and two sofa-beds. We admit pets but they have to sleep below the shed in the yard.
Can Tesset is placed in the beautiful countryside of the pre- Pyrenees mountains, but the main mountains are close at only 30 minutes by car. Also we are at only five minutes form the Lake of Ivars and Vila-sana, which is one of the most important Catalan places for birdwatching. And finally, we are near to lot of adventure sports placed in Sant Llorenç de Montgai swamp and river Noguera Pallaresa (kaiak, rafting, hidrospeed, BTT, canyoning, bungee jumping, climbing) at only 15 minutes.

The Costa Brava/Catalonia/Barcelona region
In a while from Castellserà there are various icons of our heritage. At the other side of highway A2 we will find Bellpuig, and in the town's church you will be able to see maybe one of the best scultures from Rennaissance in Catalonia: the grave of Ramon Folch de Cardona. And on the outskirts there is the visitable monastery of Sant Bartomeu. If we go to south we also will be able to visit the nostalgic Museum of Toys and Puppets in Verdú, the biggest colection of toys in Catalonia, with thousands of items cataloged. It's notable the terrific gothic monumental set of the church and castle in Verdú. Furthermore you can buy some typical black pottery as a souvenir. Not far from here there is a exceptional monument, one of the main examples of Catalan medieval gothic architecture in monasteries: the XIVth century monastery of Vallbona de les Monges, a key role in the Cistercian Route together with Poblet and Santes Creus. For living those ancient times you should visit the old town of Guimerà while they reenact their famous medieval market, or you can also visit the chariot's museum in Anglesola. If you come in winter then you have the possibility to do a reservation for walking inside the Montclar Tunnel, the path of Urgell Canal through the strong mountain, naturally at this season there is no water because the peasants don't need to irrigate the fields.
In this shire you can play a lot adventure sports: kaiak, rafting, hidrospeed, BTT, canyoning, bungee jumping, climbing, walking with snowshoe and snowmobiles, balloon, paragliding, paramotor, hang gliding, tandem...
In this vast shire it's remarkable the natural heritage formed by the Montsec mountains. The west area or Montsec d'Ares grows over the Àger valley, and the east area or Montsec de Rúbies grows over the river's basin of Meià, famous because the fossils founded arround here. One of the most outstanding hikes in this shire is the gorge of Mont-rebei, which has been drilled by Noguera Ribagorçana river. The nobleman Arnau Mir de Tost left in this area his strong reminiscence: in Àger it's remarkable the collegiate and castle of Sant Pere, with its slender cloister. Here the most corageous people maybe will want to practise paragliding. If you have got time enough go until Pallars shire for visiting the original domains of the old medieval knight at the north side of the mountains, like the romanesque castles of Mur or Llordà. Back to Àger, it is interesting the Astronomical Park of Montsec where the secrets of Universe are observed and learned. Driving back from Àger you also can visit the monastery of les Avellanes. If you go to Ponts on Mardi Gras you should tast their mess (a kind of soup) and take photos from the impressive romanesque church of Sant Pere. The one of Santa Maria, in Cubells, has got a very good portal, which guards inside the building one of the scarce Catalan “milk Virgin Maries”, which breastfeeds the Jesus child.
In Balaguer the shire museum revises the influence left by the saracens in these fertile lands. You should visit too the gotic church of Santa Maria, the convent of Sant Domènec and the town cross. We also can aproach ourselves to the monastery of Santa Maria de les Franqueses.
Leaving the city by north we can go for enjoying nature to the Sant Llorenç de Montgai swamp. Instead of, leaving it by west we'll see the skyline formed by the old and strong ruins of Castelló de Farfanya's walls, village where is placed the gotic altarpiece of la Pietat (The Pity). Otherwise, if what we wanted is to leave the car in Balaguer we should get into the relaxing and original train Tren dels Llacs: for only a morning trip we can step down to any station and come back with another train, but if you are patient and want to enjoy a beautiful landscape, set youselves comfortable until Salàs de Pallars, on Pyrenees. Halfway to Camarasa road you have to visit one of the Memory Spaces Route where took place the Merengue Battle, when Catalan soldiers defended the Republic in 1938.
At the shire's capital, Tàrrega, you can visit the Shire Museum (Museu Comarcal), where a variegated collection of archaeological pieces are shown following the long history of our shire. Near it you can see the Palace of Marquises of the Floresta, an important bulding from XIIIth century which has been virtualy reproduced. For resting some time you can go to Sant Eloi Park, which have 20 ha and a lot of quiet nooks. Otherwise if you want to have breakfast in a domestic environtment go to Station Cafè, also called Cal Maimó, a modernist building designed by Puig i Cadafalch.
The historic Urgell Canal has made that one of the most fertiles shires of Catalonia. For knowing it's history you may go the Cultural Space of Urgell Canal, which has inside a modern museum. Also in Mollerussa you have to watch the various originalities showed at the Paper Dresses Museum. Regarding the more conventional artistical heritage go to see an almost living example of medieval ghotic catalan pictures: the Virgin Mary of the Lily altarpiece in Vilanova de Bellpuig.
This is a cereal area par excellence. In Guissona we can do a guided visit among the Roman ruins. In the little village of Torà we will learn how our ancestors made an essential food as bread was. And in Montfalcó we will take photographs from a typical Catalan cloused-village. Near Castellserà it's remarkable the well worked lleidatan romanesque of Sant Esteve de Pelagalls church, in Plans de Sió. But if you like surprises you should go to the medieval village of Sant Pere dels Arquells (near the highway A2) and take photos of yourselves with three old military planes from Soviet Union wich somebody in the neighborwood carried from somewhere away: a Mig-15, a Mig-21 and a Mig-23, from the Russian, Hungarian and Czech-Slovak armies.
The shire's capital is Cervera, where you can see the modernist building Sindicat Agrícola, or visit the house of the old historian and archivist Duran i Sanpere as he left it at his death. At the outskirts we will take photos of one of the fewest catalan circular hermitages: Sant Pere el Gros.
In this part of the Lleida plain their people combine wisely the dry land and the irrigated land. Here is elaborated probably the best oil from all Mediterranean. In the shire's capital, les Borges Blanques, you have to go to the ambitious Interpretation Center of les Garrigues where, plus visiting the museum and learning the cultural importance of the olive oil, you will know all about rural routes in this shire: one about rock art, the prehistorical hamlets, the one about its smashing castles that we've talked about already... Recently the city opened the Macià Space, an interpretation center for learning about the most important president of the catalan history in XXth century.
Outskirts, inside an old castle of Templarian Monks, you will find the Theme Park of Oil with old press machines (among which the biggest in the world), pedagogic explanations, great quality oils for buying and you should see Catalan olive trees which are 2.000 years! If you want to walk quietly or take the bike you will go along the 9 leaps route while you try to search why the Urgell Canal does nine sudden falls in this part... The reason not always is the most evident!
The capital of the West Catalan Lands and West Strip is, obviously, Lleida. Its cultural services are huge, impossible to visit all them in only one holidays trip. As essential spots we recomend you to go up to “el Castell” (the castle), that is, the Seu Vella de Lleida (the Old Cathedral), where you can experience yourselves the majesty of one of most famous gothic buildings in Catalonia, and from the top of its bell tower you can watch the great lleidatan landscape. An obligatory visit is the modern Museu de Lleida Diocesà i Comarcal (Diocesan and Shire Museum of Lleida) which restores, preserves and maintains the big artistical heritage generated by our ancestors. Otherwise, more contemporary is the Museum of Art Jaume Morera placed at carrer Major (Mayor street). Also in that street there is the Palace of Paeria, thats it the city hall, probably one of the most known facades in Catalonia and you can also do a visit inside. Near from here is placed too the old Hospital de Santa Maria, a beautiful civilian gothic building which today is the see of the Institut d'Estudis Ilerdencs, an important cultural institution in the region. Inside a half romanesque a half gothic odd church of Sant Llorenç there are more artistic pieces lent by Museum of Lleida. For people who loves engines we strongly recomend to visit for free the Museu de l'Automoció, a good colection of old cars including Hispano Suiza and a Rolls-Royce. Also interesting and pedagogical for the children is the descentralized Water Museum with guided visits to the old camp of “la Canadenca”, the canadian company which brought the electricity to catalan homes one hundred years ago, and the visit to the old big cistern made in the XVIIIth century for supplying potable water to the lleidatan people. Inside the modern Llotja of Lleida there is a congress hall, one teatre and, on the terrace, a public viewpoint. Stroll in the Champs Élysées, or arrive until Mitjana Park for enjoying the nature in a little riparian forest and its lakes.
But Segrià shire it's a lot more than its capital! Put your way towards Torrebesses village, a monumental set with its castle, various Renaissance houses and a church which has got maybe the unique altarpiece made of stone in all Catalonia, it weighs four tons and is 700 years old. Leaving Camarasa by north we can drive along C-13 until the Aiguabarreig del Segre-Noguera, the spot where this both large rivers meet mixting his diferent waters and where a beautiful forest grows.
Castellserà is placed at the Catalan shire of Urgell but very close to Noguera, Pla d'Urgell, Segarra and Garrigues. With only few minutes we can access to a magnificient example of the Catalan natural heritatge for birdwaching: the Lake of Ivars and Vila-sana. Nearest city is the old medieval royal town of Agramunt, where still today there is the antiaerial shelter from Civil War placed exactly under the church of Santa Maria. On the outskirts of Preixens we should leave the car for finding too the bunkers of the republican troops, who defended Catalonia. All these heritage is integrated on the Memory Spaces Route that remembers the special sceneries of the Civil War in the West Catalan Lands. Also it is visitable the Guinovart Space, a good example of our rural contemporary art. If you enter la Segarra shire you will do it by its route of smashing castles: l'Aranyó, Montcortès, les Pallargues, Ratera, Florejacs, Vicfred... some of which are in a perfect condition and visitable. It's strongly recomended to visit the castles interpretation center in Concabella.
