The Costa Brava/Catalonia region
The town of Almenara Alta (region of Urgell) is located 6 kilometres away from Agramunt, 15 kilometres from Tàrrega (capital of the region), 59 kilometres from Lleida, 86 kilometres from Tarragona, 200 kilometres from Girona and 125 kilometres from Barcelona. Casa Conella is located at the base of the magnificent Pilar de Almenara.
Lleida / Almenara Alta area
The town of Agramunt is the geographical centre and the main town of La Ribera de Sió, a natural region located at the confluence of the Urgell, La Segarra and La Noguera, and confined by the mountain ranges of Montclar and Almenara. It is an exquisite place to walk and know the historical secrets that one can find on these lands. These traces of the past are manifested as different remainders of Iberian towns, mosaics and ceramics of the Roman epoch.
Cultural and artistic corners that is essential to visit:
#Church of Santa María: Romanesque from the XIII century, with baroque altarpiece of the XVIII century. It was declared national monument in 1932. #Castle of Agramunt: Its presences dates back to the year 1051 #Casa de la Vila: Baroque façade of the XVIII century. It was restored in the year 2002. #Market Square: With portals on its four sides since the XIX century. #Plaza de la Muralla: where there are remainders of the antique wall of Agramunt. #Guinovart Space: Located in an antique building of the municipal market. Space where there is an exhibition of the works of the internationally known painter and sculptor Josep Guinovart. #Donzell de Urgell: Medieval Village.
Near Agramunt, four kilometres away from its historical centre, the Pillar of Almenara rises up. It is a round tower of Muslim origin, with a height of 15 metres, from where one has an impeccable panoramic view of the Pla d'Urgell. It is a watchtower that was built in the XI century, on the highest part of the mountain range with the same name that separates the basins of the Sió and of the Ondarra, and where the municipalities of Agramunt and Tárrega were established.
This perfectly restored round tower allows the access to its highest part, where one can contemplate impressive views over the valley of Urgell on one side, and the pre-Pyrenean mountain range on the other. One can also find, a few metres away from the tower, the remainders of the church and a part of the defensive wall that confined the castle of Almenara. This castle was constituted by the tower itself, some houses, the church and these defensive walls.
Peace and tranquillity welcome the traveller that enters Montclar looking for its castle. It is located next to the entrance of the town, on the road that connects Agramunt with Artesa de Segre. Its documentation dates back to the year 981, and seemingly it was constructed over antique remainders of a Roman tower. The most antique part is, without any doubts, the ground floor, followed by the tower and the granary. The last renovation was done in the year 1635, as it is pointed out in the engraving that is seen over the entrance door.
Historical anecdote: Only five families have been owners of the Castle of Montclar since the year 1200: The Cabreras, the Ribelles, the Ponts, the Despujols and since 1986 the Miguels. The Miguels' linage comes from the Baix Empordà (castles of Palau Sator, Palau Sacosta and Púbol).
This castle has different spaces of interest: a great dining room, where medieval dinners were celebrated (nowadays it can be rented for meetings); a prison (where the prisoners waited until the day of the trial) and dungeons with revolving stones to watch the prisoners. It is also interesting the box opened next to the chapel, where the lords of the castle could attend the religious services without going out or stay together with the people.
