The Powys/Brecon Beacons region

Vulcan Lodge - the Searle sits in the Upper Wye Valley which is designated an area of special interest and beauty. It is only 3.5 miles from the market town of Rhayader: the gateway to the Elan Valley. With its network of lakes and dams the Elan Valley is considered to be the Lake District of Wales.

The backdrop to the area is the Cambrian Mountain range which stretches from Rhayader to the coast in Ceredgion.

Llanwrthwl

Rhayader is a vibrant town with much to offer the visitor. With its Leisure Centre, Elan Valley Visitor Centre, Museum, Community Arts Centre (CARAD) Willow Globe open air Shakespeare theatre and Red Kite Centre it is rich in culture and interest. Each year there are a number of local agricultural shows in the surrounding villages and Rhayader itself has a Grand Carnival week with events occurring on a nightly basis over a 10 day period. There is a programme of events at the Elan Valley Visitor Centre throughout the summer season and the Leisure Centre offers school holiday activities for children. There is a children's playbarn 3 miles from the cottage.

With a population of just over 2,000 Rhayader has a range of shops including a Spar store and chemist. It also has 12 pubs!

For walkers the Wye Valley Walk is just a 10 minute walk . The Red Kite Centre at Gigrin Farm where the wondrous raptors can be seen at close quarters at feedng time each day, is 3 miles away. For cyclists there are many cycle paths and trails, and in Rhayader there is a mountain bike centre which offers guided tours and bike hire. For canoe enthusiasts there is a canoe access point on the river nearby and there are many opportunities for fishing both on the Wye and Marteg rivers and at Llyn Gwyn pool owned by Rhayader Angling Association.

"Fantastic Cottage next to the River!"

Great cosy cottage with everything you need for a self catering stay. First class here with little extras like welsh cakes, wine and milk - nice touch! Great for our dog too. Will definitely return… More

Thank you very much for writing such a positive review. I am pleased you enjoyed your stay in the Searle. We are only in our second year of trading so feedback from customers is a very useful tool for evaluating our service and facilities. The Searle is a very popular cottage due I think to its unusual design, space and cosiness. I look forward to seeing you again at some future date.

"First class accommodation"

We have previously stayed at the caravan site at Doldownlod and found it to be excellent.
The Vulcan Lodges are equal to it..
We stayed in Searle Lodge with our dog. The owners have not pinched any pennies setting these lodges up. They are well appointed with modern facilities throughout, well maintained and spotlessly clean. We could not have been more comfortable.

The site is convenient for a walk down the river with the dog (important and only 150 yards away!), fly fishing (more important!!) or just getting away from it all.
Next door is a well stocked mini market and adjoining cafe, which does good simple food.

Without doubt, the best self catering accommodation we have ever stayed in, and in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of Wales.
We'll be going back!

Thank you very much for taking the time to review your stay in the Searle. We very much appreciate the positive comments you have made. Yes - we really are lucky to have the river so close by which is very useful for the early morning dog walk! I'm glad you felt the shop, post office and café nearby to be of benefit. Guests find it especially useful for their morning paper and odds and ends they may have forgotten to bring with them. We very much look forward to seeing you again some time in the future.

Best wishes

Thank you for posting such a positive appraisal of our Searle cottage. We are very pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. The area certainly has a wonderful variety of walks to choose from and to suit all requirements. As far as the gap in the fencing is concerned I'm on the case! We look forward to seeing you again some time in the future should you choose to visit us again.

"Relaxed walking holiday."

We loved the quirkiness, of the Searle. We felt relaxed and it felt like a home. Clean, a welcome tray was a lovely thought and most welcome after our journey. The bed was very comfortable, and the kitchen had everything you needed. Having lovely weather made all the difference, being able to walk out to the garden in the morning and eat your breakfast. Then in the evening have a most welcome glass of wine in the evening sun after a day out walking. There are some lovely walks near by, or use your car and go further afield. Just along from the cottage is a store where you can get your morning newspaper and anything else you may need. Then next door to that is a retro cafe, where you can enjoy homemade cakes, a cooked meal or just a cup of coffee and if the weather is kind to you sit outside in the garden.

Thank you for taking the time to review the Searle. We are very pleased you enjoyed your stay and in particular the Searle cottage. We very much look forward to seeing you again at some time in the future.

"A truly comfortable retreat"

An amazingly beautiful, homely and clean place with plenty of room for me and my wife along with our two month old daughter. All the mod cons you would expect (and some you wouldn't!), along with a fully stocked kitchen. A very nice welcome basket which was a pleasant touch. The accomodation is part of a total of three little 'holiday homes' which share laundry facilities which was convenient. There is a petrol station and a shop next door which sells everything you could possibly need for a short stay (including plastic cups!). There is also a cafe next to the shop which is open until 5.30pm (which we didn't use) but could have chosen to have breakfast, lunch or tea in. I describe the accomodation to friends and family as being 'in the middle of nowhere' but I use that in the most positive way possible - that is exactly what my wife and I wanted. We wanted a retreat where we would not be disturbed or have to think about anyone or anything, and in this respect, it was perfect for us. There are things to do within an hours drive away if you wanted lots to see and do, but there are plenty of walks you could do locally. I'm sure it would be a lovely place to be in the warmer months as there is a garden outside with picnic benches which would make a perfect place for a barbecue.

Thank you so much for posting a comment about your stay with us recently. We are very pleased indeed that you enjoyed your stay. You are right - in warmer weather it is a beautiful place to be. We know that we are very lucky to live in such a lovely part of Wales and we enjoy sharing its beauty with our guests. Thank you again for taking the time to comment on your stay with us.

we are really pleased you had such a lovely Christmas especially since it was the first time you had been away for this festive season. It is very kind of you to post such positive comments. I'm glad the gates worked! We have only recently added these as a previous guest with 2 dogs had advised it would be a good idea.

As you say, the area has some outstandingly beautiful scenery and it seems the adverse weather did not spoil your enjoyment!

I hope you will be able to visit again some time in the future and in the meantime we wish you both a healthy and happy New Year.

Thank you for your very positive comments about the Searle cottage. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay and look forward to your return visit next year. I am glad you found the scenic drives information useful. We really do have some spectacular scenery around us.

It was helpful to get your advice about looking at pet safety and we are now doing this. Perhaps something like a child guard on the entrance door would be beneficial - especially in the warmer weather when guests may want to leave the entrance door open.

Thank you again for taking the time to review our Searle Cottage.
