Vulcan Lodge - the Middleton is situated in arguably the most beautiful part of the Upper Wye Valley with the Cambrian mountains, Elan Valley lakes and Wye Valley Walk close by. Whether your enthusiasm is for walking, cycling, fishing, birdwatching or canoing - or you just want a peaceful, relaxing holiday, this is the place for you.
The 4* Middleton is the largest cottage in the Lodge and has luxury and style. The conversion of the old inn has been undertaken sensitively in order to preserve the best of the old inn - oak beams and stone walls - while providing all of the fittings and furnishings the discerning visitor of today has come to expect of 4 star accommodation.
The Middleton is on the ground floor with level access front and rear. It has 3 bedrooms: 2 double and a twin and a large dining room which can accommodate 23 guests if booked with the other Lodge cottages. It is luxuriously furnished and the garden has outdoor furniture and parasols for the warmer days with plenty of room to barbecue.
This cottage is ideal for group bookings: family gatherings, cycle clubs, walking groups, canoists. There is a large purpose built secure cycle store with bike stands and facilities for hosing down at the end of the day. Also, there is a large laundry and drying room with facilities for boot cleaning and storage.

The Powys/Brecon Beacons region
Vulcan Lodge - the Middleton, sits in the Upper Wye Valley which is designated an area of special interest and beauty. It is only 3.5 miles from the market town of Rhayader: the gateway to the Elan Valley. With its network of lakes and dams the Elan Valley is considered to be the Lake District of Wales.
The backdrop to the area are the Cambrian Mountains which extend from Rhayader to the coast of Ceredigion.
Rhayader is a vibrant town with much to offer the visitor. With its Leisure Centre, Elan Valley Visitor Centre, Museum, Community Arts Centre (CARAD), Willow Globe open air Shakespeare theatre, Red Kite Centre and Mountain Bike Centre, it is rich in culture and interest. Each year there are a number of local agricultural shows in the surrounding villages and Rhayader itself has a Grand Carnival week with events occurring on a nightly basis over a 10 day period. There is a programme of events at the Elan Valley Visitor Centre throughout the year and the Leisure Centre offers school holiday activities for children. There is a children's playbarn 3 miles from the cottage.
With a population of just over 2,000 Rhayader has a range of shops including a Spar store and chemist. It also has 11 pubs!
For walkers the Wye Valley Walk is just a 10 minute walk from the cottage. The Red Kite Centre at Gigrin Farm where the wondrous raptors can be seen at close quarters at feeding time, is 3 miles away. For cyclists there are many cycle paths and trails close by and in Rhayader there is a mountain bike centre which offers guided tours as well as bike hire. For canoe enthusiasts there is a canoe access point on the river a short walk away and there are many opportunities for fishing both on the rivers Wye and Marteg and at Llyn Gwyn pool owned by Rhayader Angling Association.
