Oswestry is just under 20 miles from Tanyffridd, an ancient market town located in the North of Shropshire close to the English - Welsh Border, its strategic position as a 'frontier town' has given it a turbulent history. Today the town still retains its vital function as a market and shopping centre serving North West Shropshire and Mid Wales. The narrow passageways link streets whose names conjure up images of the past: English Walls, Welsh Walls, The Bailey and the Horsemarket.

Welshpool is just over 20 miles from Tanyffridd, nestling in the upper reaches of the picturesque Severn Valley on the Welsh side of the border it is also a bustling Market Town. Surrounded by the rolling hills of Montgomeryshire and the glorious unspoilt countryside of Mid Wales Welshpool possesses the largest sheep market in Europe. Both these towns are important local shopping and agricultural centres, retaining the intimacy of rural towns serving local people. They are also home to a number of specialist and independent shops.

National Trust properties in the area; Chirk Castle (14 miles) Erddthig (23 miles) Powis Castle (22 miles) and Attingham Park (36 miles)

Shrewsbury (30 miles) and Chester (36 miles) historic town rich in buildings of architectural interest and excellent towns for shopping.

Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant

Tanyffridd is just 2.5 miles miles from the pretty village of Llanrhaeadr where you will find an excellent selection of shops, welcoming country pubs that serve food, a fish and chip shop and a café.

A wealth fascinating cultural history is waiting to be discovered in this beautiful part of Wales. Myths and legends abound as do castles and waterfalls, lakes and mountains. This is wonderful walking country with the spectacular Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall, one of the seven wonders of Wales and the tallest single drop waterfall in the UK is close by. At 240 feet it is taller than Niagara Falls, although somewhat narrower was described by George Borrow as "An immense skein of silk agitated and disturbed by tempestuous blasts. I never saw water falling so gracefully" it is a must see! You'll be amazed by its beauty as the waters crash through the natural rock formations. Water plunges down a vertical cliff and flows through a circular hole before shooting down into plunge pools below a footbridge and this site was listed recently in The Times' Wild Swimming guide.

The breath taking scenery of the Welsh mountains offers you quiet hidden valleys, wild moorland and windy peaks, woodlands and magnificent waterfalls, all within easy walking distance of the house. To help you discover the beauty of this landscape easy to follow descriptions of a number of circular local walks are available in the farmhouse.

St Dogfan's church in Llanrhaeadr village is famous as the place where Bishop William Morgan translated the Bible into Welsh in 1588. His achievement is now looked on as a major monument in the history of the Welsh language and St Melangell's Church, nine miles from Tanyffridd, has been a place of pilgrimage for over a thousand years. According to legend, Melangell was given the Pennant valley as a place of sanctuary by Prince Brochwel Ysgithrog in the c7th after the hare he was hunting took refuge under her skirts. The valley became a sacred site and a shrine was built to St Melangell.

Explore the area using the Meini Bywiol, Living Stones Trail: and discover a wealth of hidden treasures in these two churches and 13 other remarkable churches and chapels in this part of Montgomeryshire. Experience their unique atmosphere and setting; be amazed by individual achievement and craftsmanship; learn about political and religious exploits; encounter revolutions in architecture, and sense an enduring faith from buildings that remain 'living stones' in the life of their communities.

Ten miles from Tanyffridd near the village of Llansilin, you will find the remains of Owain Glyndwr's fine moated mansion Sycharth.

Walks and trails, waterfalls, bird watching, adventure activities, cycle hire, spas, boating, shooting and fishing are available in the area. Details for these activities available on request. The lakes of Vyrnwy and Bala and the Snowdonia National Park are a short drive away.
