The Asturias region

Asturias is one of the Spanish autonomies located on the Cantabrian coast, in the north of the Iberian peninsula. Its surface of 10,566 km2 stretches between the Cantabrian mountain range and the Atlantic Ocean, causing the area to have mild and rainy weather. The complexity of its orography and the proximity of the Asturian Massif to the coast has turned this region into a complex of summits, ranges and valleys drawn together by a wide network of short but plentiful rivers.

The territory can be differenciated in three well-marked areas: the coast, the mountains and the inner valleys. The proximity of the Cantabrian range to the coast makes for oceanic climate, without significant differences in temperature, with warm summers and mild winters.

With these mild seasons, Asturias boasts a great variety of floral and wildlife, as well as protected species of great ecological interest native to Asturias.

The extraodinary conservation of the mountains enables animals in danger of extincion to roam free. Bears, wolves and capercaillies are to be found living together with roe deers, foxes, chamoises, wiild boars, otters, a great variety of birds, insects and many different reptiles.

Advancing deep into the valleys and hills, there are countless forests full of beech, yew, oak, birch and holly trees, being the oak or “Carballo”, being the most popular among the Asturian trees.

Due to its varied landscape, Asturias invites us to enjoy and explore its nature.

BEACHES:

There are many beautiful and paradaise beaches all along the Llanes litoral

Guadamía, Villanueva, Cuevas de Mar, San Antonio, Gulpiyuri, San Antolín, Torimbia, Barro, Sorraos, Troenzo, San Martín, Poo, El Sablón, Puerto Chico, Toró, Ballota, Andrín, Vidago, Buelna ...etc.

Hiking routes an natural environment :

The “ Many Coloured Route in Valle Oscuru” runs through the valley of the Carranzo or the Valle Oscuru. Its objective is to highlight characteristics and features of this valley which runs along the course of the Río Cabra

The Coastal Path

The route begins in Bustio (Borough of Ribadedeva) and ends in the beach, La Playa de San Antolín. It is 49.5 km in length and has been divided into 4 stretches to make it easier.

St. Peter walk and the town trail

On the beach at el Sablón. From the beach you can get to the Paseo de San Pedro (The clifftop walk of St Peter) by going up some steps which come out onto the walkway or by carrying on along the avenue de las Gaviotas thereby meeting a less steep set of steps onto the walkway

The Protected Countryside "Sierra del Cuera"

At first sight from the flan area of land around Llanes, the Sierra appears to be a white limestone wall, almost deprived of plant life.

The Cliffs at the Ensenada del Gordo and the field of Bufones

Access to these is via a footpath located to the east of Cué. These are a magnificent example of typical limestone cliffs, deeply eroded by the sea. At high tide the waves hitting the base of the cliffs produce one of the largest impacts on this section of the coast.

The mouth of the River Purón

The mouth of the river is situated to the east of the village of Andrín. The best place to see this tidal estuary is fom the cliffs on the right hand side , close to the coastal path, which comes from Puertas de Vidiago

The Beach at Cobijero . Natural Monument

Access to the area called Cobijeru can be had via a small footpath which starts in the village of Buelna. It follows the course of a small stream which loses its waters before it arrives at the sea.

The Beach at Golpiyuri. Natural Monument

This is to be found on the west side of the beach of San Antolín de Bedón. The best access is to be had by taking the coastal pathway from the beach of San Antolín, going in a westerly direction up some steps
