The West Wales / Pembrokeshire / Carmarthenshire region
Carmarthenshire is know as the Garden of Wales. it's easy to see how it became so with such wonderful scenery, gardens, history and nature all at your fingertips.
Llanelli area
About the Area/Things to Do
Whatever type of holiday you like, whether it be sight seeing, history, nature, thrills, activity, horse riding, lazing on the beach, water sports and much more, you'll be surprised to know that all are at your fingertips.
The Garden of Wales is how Carmarthenshire is described and it’s evident why that is. No wonder - with miles of stunning coastline, history, nature reserves and rolling countryside, it provides an opportunity to enjoy all that it offers.
Beachlands House is located just metres away from the award winning Millennium Coastal Park which has the newly opened Discovery Centre. Here you can find a casual dining restaurant, shop and also offers hire of equipment. This is the largest land reclamation project ever in Wales and cost £30 million. Former industrial landscape and wasteland totalling over 2000 acres has been transformed into a stunning 22km coastal pathway and cycle track links the National Wetlands Centre & Pembrey Country Park. During the summer months take a trip along the pathway on the Sospan Hopper Land Train, which departs from the Discovery Centre.
Pembrey Country Park offers plenty of activities & facilities for families. Take a go & try out your skills on the dry ski slope or toboggan run. If that’s too much activity, then opt for a train ride, a game of pitch & putt or crazy golf, and let the kids burn off some energy in the adventure playground. A visitor centre and restaurant are also on site.
Fancy a walk or cycle? Visit the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path which covers 240 square miles of truly spectacular scenery. Take in the rugged scenery of cliffs, sandy beaches, wooded estuaries, and wild inland hills. All provide a sanctuary for wildlife.
If that’s not to your liking, get your sea legs on and take a boat trip out from Tenby Harbour and see Caldey Island. Here you can visit Caldey Abbey, home of Cistercian Monks. The monks farm this little island and produce revenue from sales of Caldey Island perfume & chocolate. Whilst you’re here, enjoy looking around the medieval priory, lighthouse & museum. To remember your day, buy a souvenir or two from the gift shop. And before you leave have some refreshment in the tea garden.
Take a trip to Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park. This is located on a stunningly beautiful headland overlooking the nature reserve of Cardigan Island. Breeding and living in the caves here is a colony of Atlantic Grey Seals. You can view them at close quarters most days.
If history is your thing, then for several hundreds years of it, pay a visit to Aberglasney Gardens which is approximately 20 miles away from the Penthouse. The main house is steeped in history. Beautiful formal gardens, such as the Walled Garden, the Ninfarium, Cloister Garden, the Yew Tunnel and many more. You will also find a shop and café/restaurant.
Roman goldmines might be your interest in which case take a trip to Dolaucothi Goldminutes They offer a great insight to how gold was mined out of the Welsh hills all those hundreds of years ago.
There is also a plethora of ancient castles around this area to view. The closest being Kidwelly Castle and Laugharne Castle.
For more wonderful horticultural displays, Dinefwr Park also has beautiful formal gardens designed and executed by Capability Brown in the 18th century. Surprisingly with all this wonderful countryside & culture, the area offers some great places for those that want a little adventure & some of the white knuckle kind!
Topping the list has to be the Oakwood Theme Park (junction 49 M4). Here you can find some high adrenalin thrill rides and more sedate children’s rides and activities. Oakwood arrange special events throughout the year – look at their website for this years features. A ‘Techiquest’ interactive science activity is also located within The Oakwood Centre.
If you prefer more gentile family fun then visit Folly Farm near Tenby. This has a zoo, farm, funfair and large indoor adventure playground for kids and adults!
If it’s a bit of target practice you are after, then look up Culla Park - offering a Paintball Centre at Trimsaran, approximately 5 miles away.
For something more 20th century, visit the Pendine Museum of Speed. Pendine Sands is where many land speed records have been attempted & broken. The museum on in Pendine town houses the famous ‘Babs’ racing car that claimed the life of Parry-Thomas when he attempted to beat Malcolm Campbell’s earlier record.
And for golfers – what better place than Carmarthenshire for a great choice of courses.
Within a 5-minute drive, you have the award winning Nicklaus Championship golf course at Machynys Peninsular Golf and Country Club.
If you require further challenges, then try out some of the following courses: Ashburnham, par 72 links (15 minutes away), Morriston, par 68 (parkland course - 25 minutes away), Fairwood Park, par 72 (parkland course - 35 minutes away), Glyn Abbey, par 70 (parkland 18 minutes away), Carmarthen, par 71 (moorland 49 minutes away), Derilys Court, par 70 (parkland 43 minutes away), Glynhir, par 69 (parkland 37 minutes away), Parc Garnant, par 72 (hillside 35 minutes away), Gower, par 71 (parkland 23 minutes away), Gowerton, par 27 (par3/driving range 17 minutes away), Pontardawe, par 70 (mountain/meadowland 37 minutes away), Pennard, par 71 (links 40 minutes away), Langland Bay, par 69 (meadowland 39 minutes away), Clyne, par 70 (moorland 34 minutes away), Earlswood, par 68 (downland 34 minutes away), Neath, par 72 (mountain 37 minutes away) and Royal Porthcawl, par 72 (links 50 minutes away).
There are plenty of places around for water sports, horse riding, cycling and much, much more!
Closer to home is the lively indoor market in Llanelli town, which offers local produce. The town also boasts shops, cafes & restaurant's and retains its' original charm.
