The Powys / Brecon Beacons / Powys region

There are many places to visit within a short drive of The Granary, including Oswestry, Welshpool, Shrewsbury, Llangollen, Powis and Chirk castles and Pistyll Rhaeadr - the highest waterfall in Wales.
The vibrant market town of Oswestry offers plenty of interest with good pubs, varied independent shops, restaurants, coffee shops historic buildings and an Iron Age hill fort. The Oswestry Food Festival is held annually in July, The Oswestry Show in August, plus, there is an Antiques Fair held twice yearly, and a monthly farmers market. Park Hall, on the outskirts of the town, is one of the region’s most exciting all weather family visitor attractions.
Welshpool is another agricultural market town and has the largest sheep market in Europe. It too can boast many independent retailers along with a steam railway and the fine medieval Powis Castle. It is possible to cruise along the canal in an authentic narrow boat from the town.
Shrewsbury is a picturesque town, with fine black and white timber houses and shops and cobbled alleyways. It is the setting for the world’s longest running horticultural show; The Shrewsbury Flower Show, held in August each year. The town has a cinema, and new theatre and art gallery on the scenic banks of the River Severn.
Wroxeter Roman City lies just outside of Shrewsbury.
Llangollen is the home of the International Eisteddfod and the gateway to Snowdonia. The area is full of natural wonders with mountains, white water rivers, the Horseshoe Pass and Horseshoe Falls. Carrying the Llangollen canal over the River Dee is the spectacular Pontcysllte Aqueduct constructed by Thomas Telford which is now a World Heritage site. 700 year old Chirk Castle is nearby.
Wrexham has a newly developed shopping centre and cinema and for the young scientist Wrexham Techniquest Discovery Centre. The National Trust property Erddig shows us a gentry family's 250 years of upstairs-downstairs life.
Lake Vyrnwy Nature Reserve is situated in the Berwyn Mountains, located south of Snowdonia. The Reserve is designated as a National Nature Reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Special Protection Area, and a Special Area of Conservation and is regularly used by ornithologists, cyclists, and hikers.
Ludlow and its castle are perched on a cliff above the picturesque River Teme in south Shropshire, one of the most unspoiled parts of rural England. It has acquired an international reputation for the quality of its food and drink.
The Stiperstones area is one of Shropshire’s most spectacular landscapes. The skyline being dominated by rocky crags rising dramatically above the heathlands.
Acton Scott is a historic working farm which offers a fascinating insight into rural life at the turn of the 19th century. The hit BBC series Victorian Farm and its follow-up Victorian Farm Christmas were filmed there.
Ironbridge Gorge is known throughout the world as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and along with its ten exciting museums and the living Victorian Town at Blists Hill, it is one of the most popular attractions in Shropshire.
Chester is a major tourist attraction and shopping location. It is one of the best preserved walled cities in the British Isles, with the added attraction of the two-tiered ‘Rows’ for shopping, whatever the weather. The famous Chester Races are held on a track right in the city centre. Along with the castle, river cruises and the zoo, it’s incredibly easy to make it a full day out.
All the towns and villages along Cardigan Bay have a long sea-faring history, with the seaside resorts of Barmouth and New Quay being ideal for family beach activities, sailing and fishing.
Much of Ceredigion's coastline is designated Heritage Coast famous for its coastal walks.
Wales is often called the "Land of Castles" and rightly so, as it is home to some of Europe's finest surviving examples of medieval castles such as Caernarfon, Conway, Aberystwyth and nearby Beaumaris on the Isle of Anglesey.
Panoramic Snowdonia casts its own particular spell on the visitor; it is the second largest National Park in England and Wales, encompassing amongst others the beautiful villages of Beddgelert, Capel Curig and Betws-y-Coed, the popular water activities of Bala Lake, the major tourist attractions of Llanberis and of course Snowdon itself, at 3560ft, the highest mountain in England and Wales.
The Llandrinio area
The ancient settlement of Llandrinio, a former welsh village of the year, is situated in the Montgomeryshire area of Powys, Mid Wales. The River Severn and Offa’s Dyke both run through the village. The river is crossed by an elegant hump backed bridge constructed in 1775, which is a Grade 1 Listed Ancient Monument. The area is bounded to the north by Llanymynech Hill crowned by one of the largest hill forts in Britain, and to the south by the Breidden Hills topped by Rodney’s Pillar (well worth the climb, for the magnificent views across the area), a classic botanical site.
The Montgomery canal, just a short walk from The Granary, is probably one of the best canals in the UK for nature conservation; all of the Welsh section has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Llandrinio is ideally suited as a place to stay for attractions such as the Loton Park Hill Climb, the annual Shrewsbury Steam Engine Rally and International Eisteddfod in Llangollen.
