The Old Forge
from £37 /night help
Cottage | 1 bedrooms | sleeps 4
On the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, and overlooking Dynefwr Castle in the Towy Valley, lies The Old Forge, a one bedroomed rural retreat. Lovingly converted from an old blacksmith's forge, to create a haven of comfort, character and charm beneath its impressive vaulted, beamed ceiling.
The kitchen is fitted with electric oven; ceramic hob; microwave and fridge with freezer compartment, and plenty of storage units. The breakfast bar seats 2 whilst the dining table can accommodate 4 people. The open plan living area with large, comfortable leather sofa bed all make this an idyllic, cosy retreat. Its furnished, walled garden area provides the perfect spot to relax and rest those tired feet after a hike or cycle through the stunning, surrounding countryside. The double bedroom has plenty of storage with wardrobe and bedside cabinets, and a cot can be provided if needed. A highchair is also available.
All linen is provided, towels can be provided for a nominal contribution of £2.00 per set, and on arrival guests will find fresh flowers and hand made flapjacks to welcome them.
The cottage is an ideal base for couples wanting a real country holiday. The National Botanic Garden of Wales, and Aberglasney Gardens are ten minutes from the property; and it's only 4 miles to the picture-perfect town of Llandeilo. With over 50 traders in its extensive antiques centre, fortnightly auctions and a great selection of eateries offering everything from fine dining to bowls of hearty, traditional cawl, Llandeilo's guaranteed to be a place you'll want to return to, time and time again.
The property is ideally located for walkers: there are numerous country routes that are accessible directly from The Old Forge, whilst others, such as the glorious 'Welsh Fans' and the Brecon Beacons can be reached by a short drive. The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, with its 170 miles of spectacular scenery is only a 45 minute drive to the west, whilst heading south will bring you to the beautiful Gower Peninsula. Just a 30 minute drive will take you to the Millennium Coastal Park, occupying around 10 miles of coastline on the Burry Estuary. The park offers superb views along its length of the Gower Peninsula – the first designated area of outstanding natural beauty in the UK. The Millenium Coastal Park offers a continuous traffic free cycle/footpath that links with the National Cycle Network; the National Wetlands Centre for Wales, and a championship links golf course.
The Towy valley, is an area rich in history and there are many castles along the course of the river that tell the story of past battles: Llandovery; Carreg Cennen; Dynefwr; Dryslwyn; Llansteffan and Kidwelly, are all worth a visit whilst you're here.
For those wanting to follow in the footsteps of the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, the beautiful village of Laugharne is a short drive away, whe you can visit the boathouse, his writing shed (preserved as if he's just stepped outside) and Brown's Hotel.
What better way to explore this part of Wales than by bike. Cycle along parts of the nearby National Cycle Network taking in beautiful scenery at a leisurely pace. For those seeking adventure, Carmarthenshire has become one of the most exciting places for the fast-growing sport of mountain biking: Brechfa Forest with its nationally renowned network of trails, is only 15 minutes away by car.
The owners have close links with a local bike shop, where parts, repairs and even tours can be arranged with prior notice. Secure and covered storage for bikes will also be provided by the owners, and if you're caught out in the rain on the mountains, the owners are happy to provide drying facilities.
