Further details outdoors:
Glorious countryside setting and fantastic views. Barlings Barn nestles, at the end of its own private lane, high in the unspoilt and uncrowded mid Wales hills in beautiful mature over-stuffed cottage gardens and wildflower-strewn grounds. Roses and honeysuckle clamber and tumble over ancient tree stumps.
There are many dingles, nooks and crannies to relax and sunbathe in whilst enjoying the beauty in peace and quiet - sometimes you can just hear the beat of the bird's wings in flight or a sheep cough in the adjoining fields. 21st Century noise and pollution seems a million miles away. Fabulous for star-gazing - no light pollution.
You can paddle in the gurgling streams that potter through the magical tranquil 20 acre woodland where bluebells, primroses and violets bloom (owls, woodpeckers, buzzards, squirrels and myriad small birds nest there). Swathes of buttercups, daisies, wild orchids carpet the paddock whilst leaving room for riotous games of cricket/rounders/football plus family ‘It’s a Knockout’ competitions. Summer house ‘pavillion’ in elevated position with outstanding valley vista
Enjoy mud stew and grass soup in ‘Buttercup Cottage’ the cute little Wendy house - just for the little ones - tucked into the paddock by the Gazebo, barbecue and waterfall.
Many strategically placed picnic tables throughout the grounds are perfect for alfresco dining either by sun or candlelight.
Unwind further by hunkering down on the leafy forest floor for a spot of twilight badger watching.

The Powys / Brecon Beacons / Powys region

This really is a lovely area, and although blissfully quiet there are lots of places to explore and many activities available locally; riding, walking, fishing, clay pigeon shooting, quad bikes, bird and badger watching, sailing, mountain biking around the lakes, golf, great beaches, Cader Idris, and places of natural beauty and historic interest to visit. Plus, of course, the superb facilities we offer at Barlings Barn! You might also care to visit www.foc.org.uk http://www.dyfivalley.org.uk http://www.gomidwales.co.uk and http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/mid/listings which offer further useful information about the area
The Llanbrynmair / Pandy area
Llanbrynmair (English translation is St. Mary's church on the Hill) is a tiny village with the friendly community dotted around the surrounding hills, in Powys, Mid Wales on the A470 road between Caersws and Machynlleth. 11th C church still proudly stands at a short distance on the hill in Llan.
Llanbrynmair has a very welcoming pub (very good selection of beer), village shop (free range eggs, etc., orders taken that can be delivered to the door), ‘Machinations’ (fascinating collection of automata, coffee shop and rabbit kingdom. Also the home of internationally renowned artist Terence Lambert.
Local attractions include arts and crafts in the village with the world famous Centre for Alternative Technology a short drive away. At various times throughout the year there are stunning choral recitals, Eisteddfodau, village shows, sheepdog trials and the annual international Gregynog Music festival.
Fabulous walks to the source of River Severn high in the Hafren Forest, in the hills at the end of our valley. This is a wonderful area for pottering and exploring the small local towns of Llanidloes - http://www.llanidloes.com/ - museum of local history and industry, ancient market hall, where John Wesley preached and historic Machynlleth - visit Owain Glydwr's breakaway parliament building, craft shops and local silver smith, organic whole-food cafe linked to C.A.T., amazing lantern and artistic fireworks display late in year.
Stunning Autumn colours in the ancient oak and beech forests in this area rival New England to my mind. Glacial lakes and gorges, 3,000 year-old standing stones, castles of Kings and Marcher Lords and the Roman influence plus the connections to King Arthur add to the wonderful atmosphere.
Barlings Barn is located along the honeysuckle strewn lanes, two miles from Llanbrynmair viilage and ony 35 minutes by car from the golden sand-dunes and huge beach at Aberdovey with tiny fishing harbour (Aberdovey crab is scrummy) award winning restaurants, pub and a scattering of fascinating shops.
